Shipping Large Vehicles
SHIPMENT OF LARGE VEHICLES
One of the more challenging aspects of Vehicle Transportation is shipping vehicles such as SUV's, Vans, and Pick Ups.
Immediately, the responsibility of your broker is to properly price these vehicles so you dont face transport issues when the pick up date arrives. However, often times it takes additional planning and preparation to smoothly transport vehicles of this size.
The most important thing to consider is that a car carrier will locate as many cars as possible first, before they ever consider loading a vehicle that is much larger in size and weight. Regardless of the price, smaller vehicles are easier to maneuver and the profit margin is always higher when weight and size is factored. Because of this clear preference, its recommended to schedule the transport of large vehicles with as much time in advance that allows.
One of the bigger debates among Auto Shippers is how much more should Large vehicles be transported for. Ideally, drivers will aim to collect the same amount as they would charge to transport a regular car, plus 50%. The additional money covers the extra space and weight that the vehicle occupies while keeping the car carrier profitable. Due to the instability of the COD with larger vehicles, its always recommended to be specific as possible with the model of your vehicle. For example, a regular Cadillac Escalade and an Escalade ESV are two completely different vehicles for a truck driver. Always be as specific as possible and avoid issues on pick up.
Several years ago, the fear with large vehicles is that customers tend to fill them with as much items as they could fit. When you consider the overall size of an SUV, there can be several hundred pounds of items without the driver having any exact knowledge of how much. Thankfully, just last year, there was a new law that confirmed no cargo insurance is covered when transporting your vehicle. This basically means that if you put personal belongings in your vehicle, none of it is covered by insurance. This new standard does complicate the move for the customer, however, it allows drivers to comfortable pick up larger vehicles without the fear of hauling more cargo than automobile. Upon pick up, always make sure to review what you are going to have inside the vehicle with the driver, if anything.
Its true, some SUV's simply cannot fit on a regular car carrier. There are vehicles that are far too long and they cannot be transported on a typical car carrier. This means two things to the customer: 1) there is a limited availability of carriers 2)the COD will be different
Most importantly, it is possible to transport your Truck or SUV without any delays or hassles. As long as your Auto Shipper follows all the steps, there will not be any issues. Always be as descriptive and informative as possible so all the logistics can be taken care of before a driver ever arrives.
