Shipping Large Vehicles
SHIPMENT OF LARGE VEHICLES
One of the more challenging aspects of Vehicle Transportation is shipping vehicles such as SUV's, Vans, and Pick Ups.
Immediately, the responsibility of your broker is to properly price these vehicles so you dont face transport issues when the pick up date arrives. However, often times it takes additional planning and preparation to smoothly transport vehicles of this size.
The most important thing to consider is that a car carrier will locate as many cars as possible first, before they ever consider loading a vehicle that is much larger in size and weight. Regardless of the price, smaller vehicles are easier to maneuver and the profit margin is always higher when weight and size is factored. Because of this clear preference, its recommended to schedule the transport of large vehicles with as much time in advance that allows.
One of the bigger debates among Auto Shippers is how much more should Large vehicles be transported for. Ideally, drivers will aim to collect the same amount as they would charge to transport a regular car, plus 50%. The additional money covers the extra space and weight that the vehicle occupies while keeping the car carrier profitable. Due to the instability of the COD with larger vehicles, its always recommended to be specific as possible with the model of your vehicle. For example, a regular Cadillac Escalade and an Escalade ESV are two completely different vehicles for a truck driver. Always be as specific as possible and avoid issues on pick up.
Several years ago, the fear with large vehicles is that customers tend to fill them with as much items as they could fit. When you consider the overall size of an SUV, there can be several hundred pounds of items without the driver having any exact knowledge of how much. Thankfully, just last year, there was a new law that confirmed no cargo insurance is covered when transporting your vehicle. This basically means that if you put personal belongings in your vehicle, none of it is covered by insurance. This new standard does complicate the move for the customer, however, it allows drivers to comfortable pick up larger vehicles without the fear of hauling more cargo than automobile. Upon pick up, always make sure to review what you are going to have inside the vehicle with the driver, if anything.
Its true, some SUV's simply cannot fit on a regular car carrier. There are vehicles that are far too long and they cannot be transported on a typical car carrier. This means two things to the customer: 1) there is a limited availability of carriers 2)the COD will be different
Most importantly, it is possible to transport your Truck or SUV without any delays or hassles. As long as your Auto Shipper follows all the steps, there will not be any issues. Always be as descriptive and informative as possible so all the logistics can be taken care of before a driver ever arrives.

Quick Intro
Enclosed Carriers
Some words from one of our favorite customer!
Finally, an Auto Relocation Service that is Secure & Safe
Hiring an auto transportation service can be stressful. I mean really stressful. Especially if the car you are moving is a car you really love. You want that car to be shipped safely and securely to your intended destination. It almost makes you want to hop into the big truck with the driver doing the auto transport just to make sure they are doing everything right.
The worst is, most of these companies honestly do not understand what they are doing. They are either new to the game and trying to make a name for themselves, or they might just be scoundrels. Either way, it is not usually an experience someone who wants their car shipped safely desires.
I find that using an auto transportation service that is accredited by the BBB as a good sign that my car is going to be safe during the entirety of its auto relocation. Another good hint for me was that Bull Dog Transportation is nationwide. Any company that reaches the national level typically must be a good company. After all, if they were bad would they really have reached the national level in the first place? Highly unlikely!
I also liked the door to door transport concept. With door to door, there was no need for me to go meet up with the transporters to get my car back and then me having to drive my car back through a new town on my way to my new home. Honestly, it would had been a huge inconvenience for me to go pick up my car at some depot instead of just having the car securely shipped to my doorstep. Life is too busy to waste around doing errands like that, I already have plenty of other errands I do not want to do around in my daily life. So this option was something I really appreciated, it offered me al ot of value when it came to deciding which company was going to do my auto relocation.
The other thing that was a big time winner in my book was that Bull Dog Transport did not take full payment for the job until the job was complete. Actually, they did not take over 30% and they never take over 30% of the total transportation fees until my car actually arrived on my doorstep. This is a good show of faith in their ability to deliver on their promise and put me at ease.
So these are some of my tips and my views about auto relocation services. Basically if the company is a national sized company, is an accredited business, offers door to door service while also only taking 30% of the total upfront fee until the service is fully delivered, all point to a winning auto relocation service for me. Ultimately, I am a man of convenience, and all these things offer the smoothest solution to my needs.
Since Bull Dog Transport actually specializes in auto transportation, I could hand over my auto totally stress free. Unlike a lot of companies out there that name a price only to find out they have no idea what they are talking about, forcing me to pay higher prices while waiting longer shipping times. Why go with people who have no idea what they are talking about? In any sort of service I ever purchase, I always look for the best deal done by the best of the best, auto transportation is no different.

Open Carriers (Pictures)
Below are some examples of different equipment that is used to transport cars throughout the country. There is actually hundreds of styles and models that are not shown here, but the few that we selected give you a perfect example of what to expect if your interested in shipping your vehicle.
Transportation of your vehicle
Once you have selected the transport company that you want to use and everything is scheduled, the next step is to coordinate with the truck driver so he can load the vehicle. 1. The first and most important step is to establish communication with the driver and dispatch office as soon as you can. There is times when the driver isnt assigned right away, but dont worry because its normal for transport companies to build loads shortly before your vehicle is scheduled to be picked up. Ultimately, the most important thing to do is establish communication so it becomes a habit throughout the transportation. 2. By this step, the driver has already called you and provided an eta for arrival. The driver has the responsibility to brief you on any restrictions or instructions regarding the preparation of your vehicle. For example, cargo insurance became null in the auto transport industry as of March 2012. This new rule clearly states that cargo inside of vehicles will not be covered by the carriers insurance at any moment throughout the transport. The driver should review this fact so there is no confusion. 3.Once the driver arrives onsite, he will go through a document called Bill of Lading. This document serves as a receipt for the transport and it permits the driver to confirm that condition of the vehicle before its loaded on the carrier. The driver uses this form to mark any blemishes or damages to the vehicle and then has you sign to confirm the information is accurate. The document becomes even more valuable by the time of delivery because it serves as a reference to evaluate the condition of your vehicle. If there is any damages on the vehicle that were not on the BOL, then you need to file a claim with the insurance of the carrier. The exact instructions are vague depending on what carrier you use, but there is important tips that will apply to any company that you work with.
If there is damages, take as many pictures as you can, from different angles, of the vehicle and its damages.
Do not sign the B.O.L. until the carrier and yourself has taken action to resolve the problem.
Call the broker to assist you, only speaking to the carrier will sometimes lead to the carrier giving you the wrong information so you can sign the B.O.L. and they can move on. However, keep in mind that once you sign that document, you lose all leverage in winning the insurance claim.
4.Once you vehicles arrives in satisfactory conditions, the next step is to pay for the transport. A broker usually takes a broker fee which is a small percentage of the transport. Typically, from $75 to as much as $300 depending on the total cost and the amount of work involved in coordinating the transport. For example, if your looking to transport 6 vehicles at a time, expect to pay a broker fee well into the 300-400 range. Keep in mind, that brokers get paid to coordinate the transport, communicate with drivers, assist in claims, reschedule if needed, etc. Do not let a broker tell you there job is over once they dispatch the vehicle. The best companies in the country will do everything in there power to ensure the entire process is completed smoothly.
What you pay the driver is referred to as the COD (cash on delivery). The drivers expect a payment in cash, cashiers check, or a money order. Any other arrangements need to be coordinated with the broker and confirmed with the driver before the vehicle is loaded.
In the end, it goes back to the communication you have with the broker and carrier. If there is no communication, chances are there will be difficulties throughout the transport.
Happy Transporting!
Uship
uShip Car Shipping
BullDog Transport is focus on transporting vehicles. In fact, we come into the office everyday with a goal of transporting a certain number of vehicles. If we cannot accomplish our goal, we simply stay in the office until the job is done.
Unfortunately, our ambition as an auto transport company does not always reflect the reactions we get from potential customers. In the end, we are okay with that because time will tell how great of a company we are and the number of clients that turn away will progressively decrease.
In the mean time, we want to give everyone the opportunity to research our company along with other companies. In addition, we want to encourage potential customers to understand what the transport route is costing at this particular time. Auto Transport costs will constantly change based on weather, traffic, fuel costs, and insurance costs. This is why we have added a shipment calculator provided by Uship.
We want your business and our reputation proves that we will comply with everything you are looking for. While your deciding on what company to use, try out the shipment calculater and get an idea of how much you would be spending. We only contact you when you want to be contacted.
Auto Shipment with Enclosed Carriers
Enclosed carriers, as stated in the name, is a car carrier which is entirely enclosed so your vehicle is not exposed throughout the transport. Enclosed carriers are typically used to transport classic, luxury, and exotic vehicles due to the extra protection, insurance, and many other benefits associated with this form of transport. The price to use an enclosed carrier will always be higher than an open carrier, but its perfectly justified based on the level of service that you receive. Protection from the Weather The protection that you get from weather debris is one of the reasons why enclosed carriers are preferred among many of our customers. Weather conditions such as heavy rain fall, hail, or even heavy winds can cause dents, scratches, and even cracked glass. This does not happen everytime a vehicle is transported in an open carrier, but there is a possiblity that your at risk. Shipping your vehicle in an enclosed carrier eliminates and risk that your vehicle will be damaged by anything related to weather debris.
Theft Control. Again, theft is not something that normally occurs while shipping your vehicle on an open carrier. However, there is a small risk of your being being burglarized while the carrier is stopped at a truck stop or highway checkpoint. While transporting your vehicle on an enclosed carrier, the vehicle is never left exposed for potential theft. Vehicles are strapped down to limit vibration and nobody touches the vehicle other than the designated driver. Max Insurance. Due to enclosed carriers and their focus on shipping luxury vehicles or vehicles of high value, they insure vehicles at a minimum of $500,000 per spot on the carrier. Your vehicle will be insured whether you transport your vehicle on an open or enclosed carrier, but shipping with an open carrier is considerably less. Best Drivers in the Industry. The best drivers in the industry will typically drive enclosed carriers. This is the reason why you can expect to transport your vehicle with the best drivers in the industry when choosing to transport your vehicle on an enclosed carrier. In some cases, drivers that are experienced in enclosed auto shipment know how to position and secure your vehicle so there is no complications throughout the transport. Specifically with high end vehicles, they need to be handled with special care and attention. Peace of Mind. The peace of mind that you get when shipping your vehicle with an enclosed carrier is unlike any other. Keep in mind that your vehicle is being handled by the best truck drivers in the industry. This level of service means that your vehicle will be secure and cared for while the driver will still do everything in his power to pick up and deliver the vehicle as soon as possible. Make sure to speak with a representative of Bulldog Transport and get further information about transporting your vehicle in an enclosed carrier. (1877-834-4107) Happy Shipping
Open Carriers (Open Transport)
One of the first things that you need to determine when choosing to transport your vehicle is whether it should be shipped in an open or enclosed carrier. For most vehicles, an open carrier is preferred. The main difference between open and enclosed carriers is that open carriers do not protect your vehicle from weather elements such as rain, sun, hail, snow, dust, and other debris that you would expect to get from driving along the highway. The is the main difference and its also the biggest downfall for shipping with an open carrier. In most cases, the worst that happens is that your vehicle arrives covered in dirt or snow. Drivers in general are very conscious of the weather and will not drive through harsh weather conditions if it means your vehicle is at risk of being damaged. Nevertheless, auto shipping companies will do everything in their power to keep your vehicle safe throughout the entire transport. The best drivers in the industry have the understanding that every vehicle has its own special value to their owners. Vehicles are securely strapped to the carrier to limit mobility and reduce any vibrations that the vehicle would experience throughout transit.
A great advantage of open carriers, aside for the financial benefits, is that they typically pick up quicker than enclosed carriers. Contrary to popular belief, there are more open carriers on the road than enclosed carriers. Thus the reason why you can get your vehicle picked up much sooner, at a lesser price, compared to an enclosed carrier.
In addition, its important to consider that every open carrier will still insure your vehicle between $45,000-$100,000. Make sure to ask your representative for more insurance details so you know exactly how much your carrier is insured for. (Make sure to specify how much insurance covers for each spot on the carrier)

Holiday shipping
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !
Holiday auto shipping because less popular as the years pass. Most consumers will delay the shipment of their vehicle until after the holidays or ship well before so they dont have to deal with the hassle. However, there are exceptions to everything and holiday shipping is no different. There is plenty of consumers that have to ship their vehicle throughout the holidays because of X, Y, or Z. The first thing that is recommended when your in the position to transport your vehicle over the holiday is to allow the driver plenty of time to arrive onsite. Time is the most important thing for a driver throughout the holiday season because it allows him the flexibility to work around everyone's schedule. Keep in mind that every carrier has to work with multiple customers at a time being that car carriers usually transport multiple vehicles at a time. Its perfectly understandable that there are scenarios where you cannot give a driver a two day window, in which case, you want to make sure the communication is 100% between the yourself, the dispatcher, and the driver. Everything is possible if everyone is on the same page. The next thing to consider when shipping your vehicle is the overall price for the transport. Many companies have the tendency to escalate prices due to the holidays. You might hear mentions about weather, traffic, delays, etc, etc. The reality is that the prices should be just about the same throughout the winter. Pricing in the Auto Transport industry to fluctuate based on fuel cost and insurance prices, but there is no reason why it would cost more to ship your vehicle on December 27th compared to December 15th. On the contrary, depending on the locations, you might be able to get better deals because drivers have more of an urgency to complete their route so they can take their holiday time. Of course, this only applies when a driver is available to transport the vehicle. A transport company should only schedule a transport once they know that they can actually complete the job. Be aware of companies that might say they can pick up on the 26th of December when they are fully aware they cant follow through with their "promise".
Delivery time shouldnt be an issue throughout the holiday season. The holiday season is sometimes the most stressful for both customers and dispatchers. Delivery time in general is always based on traffic, weather, and the other vehicles on the carrier. Any company that tells you otherwise is probably not being entirely honest about what you should expect. Throughout the holidays, your main focus should be communication. Year after year, communication becomes more difficult over the holidays for drivers and customers. Dispatchers have no choice but to be in the office and answer phones, but that doesn't apply to drivers and customers. We recommend that you make an effort to communicate as much as possible with the driver and dispatcher. Although this is the responsibility of the dispatcher, you will have peace of mind knowing that everyone is aware of what they need to do and what to expect. The best companies have the best communication. The holiday season is family time, a time of the year that you can be thankful for everything you have and everything you wish to have. Contrary to popular belief, auto transporters don't want to spend the holiday season being worried that your transport did not go smoothly. The best transporters (BullDog Transport) will focus on communication and transparency to ensure that everyone is aware of exactly what to expect day after day. Regardless of what company you choose to work with, encourage communication via phone calls or emails. The best companies in the industry will be honest about what they can do and can't do. Avoid being put in the position were you are given a pick up date, yet nothing happens. [email protected], 1877-834-4107
Choosing the right Carrier?, or Broker?
Choosing the right company is the most difficult part about transport your vehicle. Of course, my recommendation will always be BullDog Transport, being that we are writing the blog :) . However, its up to the reader to determine what they need to look for in regards to choosing the best company for their vehicle transport. Its not always as simple as choosing the first company to call you. Primarily, its recommended to fully understand what kind of trucking companies are out there. The days of one company doing everything is no longer realistic, these days there are enclosed carrier companies, drive away trucking companies, brokers, shotgun transportation, etc, etc. So what company is ideal for you? Auto Transport Brokers in general have the worst reputation in the Auto Transport industry. Coincidentally, its not because of feedback from consumers, but from actual truck drivers and carrier companies. Auto transport brokers are focused, or should be focused, on three particular bullets.
Finding the most economical price for the desired transport
This allows the customer to pay the minimum amount for the transport at a minimal fee(broker fee), compared to being at the mercy of a carrier which might escalate the cost of the transport or apply hidden fees along the way.
Increase communication channels between driver and customer so the customer will always know the status of the shipment
If the driver wants to arrive a day early, or a day later, its critical that the customer knows of any changes immediately. A broker will know immediately, and make it a priority to make you aware of schedule updates.
Confirm addresses and contact information before the driver ever arrives onsite to ensure the transport goes smooth.
Imagine a driver goes East 25 miles to then discover you are located 25 miles west of said location....this translates to delays, hidden fees, disgruntled driver, and disgruntled customer
In my experience, Ive learned that Auto Transport Brokers are equivalent to representatives (sports agents, lawyers, leaders, etc) As a transport broker, we want to make sure that you are given a fair price while maintaining a high level of service. Furthermore, brokers verify that the carrier is 100% insured and licensed before ever arriving onsite.
Carriers are absolutely necessary in the Auto Transport Industry. At the end of the day, these are the companies which actually transport the vehicles. The problem is that they strongly focus on shipping vehicles, but not so much about customer service, competitive pricing, or communication. This doesnt apply to all carrier companies, but you can understand how the majority affects the carrier label.
Its not difficult to work directly with carriers, but the majority will focus on shipping and not marketing or advertisement. Brokers in general have access to most carriers in the country. If you decide to work with a carrier company, it is important that you request an insurance package, this package will contain all the paperwork that a carrier. In addition, you want to contact the FMCSA and make sure that there record is clean. This will insure that your vehicle is not delayed in the middle of the country because the carrier is having issues with a DOT officer. Again, the benefit of a broker is that they deal with this hassle for you.
Our comments might seem bias considering we are an Auto Transport Broker, but if you even consider mentioning these details with the company you decide to work with, we have helped with your decision making.
Getting Started with Auto Shipping
You have decided that you are going to ship your vehicle, and you have chosen what company you want to work with…..what now?
The idea is that the company that you chose, hopefully BullDog Transport, has already given you a window for the pick up of the vehicle. With this information, you are then able to coordinate and plan your schedule so its not too much of an inconvenience in your schedule. Unfortunately, the planning does not always work out as smoothly as it should. Ultimately, these are large car carriers that have to transport multiple vehicles for multiple customers.
1877-834-4107
What now?
Communication is the largest contributor to successful Auto Transportation. The more information the driver has, the more that he can offer in regards to scheduling and availability. If he/she does not know when you are available, the pick up process immediately becomes more complicated. This is were the broker or carrier is suppose to step in to help in making this process occur as smooth as possible. Provide as much information as possible, ask as many questions as you can so everything is crystal clear.
For example; you have scheduled for a pick up on a Saturday because you work throughout the week. It can only be Saturday and you clarify with the original sales person. The sales person then communicates with the driver so they do not show up on Friday expecting you to release the vehicle.
The process seems like common sense, but there is many times that there is a slip in communication and the driver gets the impression that there is no vehicle to transport at all because it cannot be release when he/she arrives onsite.
To recap, this is the MOST important process working up the pick up of the vehicle. It has to be very clear when and where we can load the vehicle(s). The more information that we have, or another company has, the smoother the process is. In fact, take advantage of discount offers if there is no immediate rush to pick up the vehicle. Trucking companies in general always favor long pick up windows because it gives them the time to find the most economical and quality driver.

Auto Shipping 101
Auto Transportation has been around for many years and the business has expanded to a new level. This is most apparent on the business side because of the many carrier and broker companies that have entered into the market. Unfortunately, the result is that every company became very aggressive in the way they market their services. This might be a good thing for the consumer with any other product or service, however, its not the case with Auto Transportation. Why? Companies can compete aggressively with each other as much as they want, but that will not make fuel or insurance cost decrease whatsoever. In the end, what we get is many drivers that sit until they can get what they need to cover all their expenses.
Thankfully, there is a positive side to Auto Transportation. The reality is that you can tell what kind of ethics a company has from the very first phone call. In fact, the first step to choosing a company that is right for you begins with speaking with various companies to determine what their intentions are. Ironically, not every transport company will focus on transporting your vehicle. To best understand this statement, put yourself in the situation as you first speak to different transport companies and follow the checklist. *Sales Rep aggressively ask for Credit Card information and continues to mention the payment structure. This company is focused on their fee, meaning that the transport of the vehicle comes second. *Sales Rep is thorough about contact names, numbers, and addresses, focused on confirming information and waits to discuss payment at the end of the conversation. This company is focused on transporting the vehicle. The reality is that auto transportation needs to happen in order for auto transport companies to make money. No transport means no profit. This is a very quick guide for first time customers interested in having their vehicle transported. Although there is various exceptions to these two scenarios, its gives you a rough guideline to were you should start. The next posting will discuss what you should focus on next. Happy Transporting! For further information, [email protected]
Crunching Numbers on Transport CO2 Emissions in Developing Countries
Sudhir Gota
Without reliable data, transport emissions forecasting is as good as “fortune telling”
We are investing millions of dollars in transport sector in developing countries with minuscule data and inconsistent arguments. In order to understand the implications of poor data, limited capacity and institutional strength and black-box approach, let us consider the case of India.
The official estimates suggest that the total number of registered vehicles in the country has increased from 5.4 million in 1981 to 99.6 million in 2007. Some researchers argue that the total number of vehicles on road can be as high as 40% less than the total registered vehicles[1](say 60 million in 2007) and some industry reports suggest that the on-road vehicular population exceeded 94.7 million in 2010[2]. The private vehicles once registered have 15 years validity. The information on actual number of on-road commercial vehicles is more or less accurate as they are registered every year. There is no annual record system of deregistration or scrappage. This results in a huge variation in estimating total number of active vehicles on road.
The most official estimate of transport CO2 emissions is the 2007 green house gas inventory[3]. It has been estimated that the road transport sector emitted, 121.21 million tons of CO2 in 2007. Surprisingly, the same institution which quantified the emissions had reported in a scientific journal[4]that the total number of motor vehicles in 2000 was 48 million and the CO2emissions from road transport sector is 105 million tons in 2000. Interestingly, while the number of vehicles doubled in 7 years, the emissions increased by only 16 million tons i.e. mere 15%.
The below table summarizes the activity data availability at national level. This is true for other developing countries also.

The data issues get magnified further in freight sector. For example, the general lack of data and reliable data for India’s freight sector makes it difficult to understand, plan and manage freight transport, and makes it virtually impossible to measure the effectiveness of any policies to improve competitiveness and efficiency. For example, at present there is no mechanism in place for regular collecting and reporting data on freight and haulage (ton kilometer or TKM). No comprehensive data on freight movement is available that indicates origin, destination, type and size of freight carried on roads by motorized transport[5]. Furthermore, freight transport is not segregated by different types of trucks such as light commercial vehicles (LCVs), two-axle, three-axle, etc. As a consequence, road infrastructure plans and investments and policies are based on projections that have a high degree of variation and thus uncertainty, as shown in below table for road freight activity in billion ton-km.

Building India Transforming the nation’s logistics infrastructure
The below figures summarizes many studies (14 different studies by reputed institutions) which have looked at road transport CO2 estimation and projections for business as usual growth for the Indian road transport in future.
There is no consistency (except that emissions are set to grow) among results and such a huge variation in baseline for the CO2 transport emissions in future in India is shocking.
1. The variation in 2030 is approximately three times i.e. from 395 to 1200 million tons of CO2 emissions.
2. This variation in 2050 is from 743 million tons to 2300 million tons.
The problem is not with only the future projections but also current estimates. For example, the 2005 estimates vary from 98 to 216 million tons. (see below figure)
If it is not even possible to establish the baseline, how do we measure the impact of policies?
The discussion is not India specific and it applies to many of our developing countries. There is lack of transparency with regards to data availability and quality which results in questionable outcomes. Unfortunately we see little discussion on data availability and quality even though they remain the cornerstone of policy formulation and investments in transport sector.
