Pa Doung long-necked woman, Chiang Dao, Thailand by N3074Echo on Flickr.
Via Flickr: A refugee from Burma now living in northwest Thailand without the benefits or protection of Thai citizenship. We were returning by vehicle from five days of trekking among the hill tribes of Thailand and decided to swing by Chiang Dao on our way to Chiang Mai. This beautiful lady is one among many in that village who with their female offspring were so adorned. The Padaung, or Ka-Kaung as they call themselves, are a sub-group of the Karen. Ka-Kaung means 'people who live on top of the hill'. Padaung women are often referred to as 'giraffe' or 'long-necked' because of the custom of placing brass rings around their necks from when they are as young as four or five years of age until they marry. In fact it is not the neck which has stretched but the shoulders which have been forced down by the weight and pressure of the rings.
