My Longfall Boot Peeps

My longfall boot tutorial has started to get a bit of attention again lately so I just wanted to say a few things to anyone interested.

I am ALWAYS open to answering any questions about the tutorial, my boots, materials and how to use them, or anything else you want to know. My tumblr inbox is buggy so the chat is probably the best way to get a hold of me.

I get lots of questions about commissions for the braces. (metal bars) Yes I do commissions BUT I am very busy right now. I have a lot of personal stuff going on and so I’m not taking on any project right now. Hopefully I am able to start taking projects again by the end of this month.

I do not take commissions for completed longfall boots. I just don’t sorry.

You can do it!!! I see a lot of you saying how you could never make these boots and, let me tell you, it’s not as hard as it looks. These boots where my first project. I idolized this prop-maker (still look up to him) and one day I got the guts to message him on facebook and tell him how much I liked his work and I could never make anything like that and bla bla bla. And you know what happened? He messaged me back and told me “Get some supplies, get your hands dirty. You will be surprised what you can do.” So I did, and I ended up with those boots. So you CAN do it. B E L I E V E I N Y O U R S E L F.

I will be forever grateful to Volpin for taking the time out of his life to respond to me and encourage me to just try. I know I don’t hold a candle to him in skill or popularity but if I could do the same thing for someone that he did for me...lets just say it would make me really happy. So see #1 I am always here to help!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your long fall boots tutorial! I'm practically drooling over the pictures of the finished project! How durable are the boots? Can the brace portion withstand a person's entire weight? Can you jump in them? If I were to use exactly the same materials and methods, would there be any danger of the aluminum brace bending from bearing too much weight? Thanks so much in advance!

The boots are pretty durable, though they are prone to cracking if the fiberglass has any air bubbles in it. It is purely an aesthetic issue though. I stand in my boots as if they were regular high heels. That being said they are a bit tricky to balance in. I would not jump while with them for both the reason of balance and for feat that it may fracture the fiberglass. I don’t think that they would out right break but it would most likely leave large cracks or even chips in the glass/paint. Also you are most likely going to fall over. The aluminum bars I used to make the braces are rated to hold something like 1500lbs or something along those lines so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi, I noticed someone asked you a question about making longfall boots, and I don't know much about tumblr etiquette so I wasn't sure if it was rude to reblog and answer their question. But I made longfall boots for NYCC and pvc pipe does work. You just have to flatten it and its kind of a pain to heat form. I put it on the inside of the shoe as a purely support thing (I've been meaning to finish the tutorial for those..). They weren't as awesome as your's though, your's are fantastic!

I only suggested sheet because in my mind it seemed like drafting a pattern off of a round pipe would be difficult as well as finding pipe big enough. Having options is one of the best resources you can get in my opinion.

As for rebloging my ask with an answer, I would not have been bothered by it at all. I can’t speak for everyone though.

Do you have a link to where I can see your longfall boots? I would love to see how the pvc pipe worked out. I would love to see your tutorial too, when you finish it. :)

Awesome tutorial! Do you think the leather/fiberglass part be done in heated pvc pipe?

Yeah I think pvc would work, I would use sheet instead of pipe though.

Hey, I'm starting the Long Fall Boots, but i can't find any 1/4 inch leather sheets. What store/website did you get it from? Or could we just use fiberglass instead?

It is available on ebay it is not exactly the same as what I used but it will work.

This is also an option.

Hello! I'm building the Long Fall Boots and I was wondering if using boots that have a stretch fabric along the back would work instead of an all around leather boot with a zipper (if you remember the brand of boot you had, that would be great). Also, would steel be a workable substitute for aluminum? Would it be okay to use foam instead of leather for the secondary layer?

Stretchy boots should be fine. I don’t remember what mine were.

As for the steel you won’t be able to bend it. If you are worried about durability just reinforce the mounts.

No foam is too soft.

I have been getting a lot of asks lately about the my Long Fall boots I made a few years ago, and I realized, I have been intending to update my tutorial for a bout 10000 years and still have not done it. I'm going to go for the Long Fall Boots! Wish me luck! If I start soon, I should be able to get them done by June 26th for AFW if I work enough. Quick question, how much did yours cost to make? I have a budget, but my birthday is in may, so I should get enough of a boost to pay for last minute Amazon stuff. Also, how much of the supplies would I have to buy online? I live near a Joann's Fabric and a few other places, but is the leather needed hard to find?

I spent about $250-$300

Yeah I know sticker shock BUT here is something I did not find until after I was finished. This is a really good price for the leather. I recommend getting two 10”x14”

Sorry to say but the only thing I got form Joann’s was the pleather. Living near a hardware store or autozone is a plus for this project.
