a/n: idk man. this is a combination of wanting to watch merlin, learning about family life in 1500-1800 in my history course, and watching Downton Abbey. so there's that. be prepared for a lot of marriage talk.
"Have you settled on a day for the wedding yet?"
Zayn looked up from where he was laying out Niall's things for training, surprised. He wasn't quite sure why he still got shocked when Niall asked about his life - he was a good guy and a great prince. "Not yet. Sarah and I have been busy here at the castle and Dree doesn't want to plan without us."
Niall laughed, shaking his head as he finished up his breakfast. "Sarah pretends to be busy when actually she and Liz just gossip all day. Don't lie."
"We've actually been setting up for the arrival of the Prince of Cheshire, so she's got an excuse this time," he joked back. "Come on, now, you'll be late."
When Niall stood up from the table, he gave Zayn a stern look. "Take whatever time you need off, I can handle myself. You've been waiting ages to be able to marry her - take it." He grabbed Zayn by the shoulders and shook him a bit. "I'd give my left leg to marry who I like, I'm not gonna let you wait."
"Thank you." Zayn sighed, rubbing his hands over his face. "Let's get you dressed and this place cleaned up, then I'll take the rest of the day off if you don't mind."
"Just help me out and then send for Sarah. I guarantee she's not doing anything important." He laughed, and Zayn grinned and nodded in agreement.

Sarah pulled at Liz's hair at the sound of another sigh, causing the other girl to gasp in shock.
"What was that for?!" She glared at Sarah's reflection in the mirror as the girl continued to braid her hair.
"Quit grumbling about Prince Harry, he can't be that bad. You could have been saddled with that damn Duke Parker or some shit from Yorkshire, he's quite a twat. And Prince Harry's lovely on the eyes."
"Such lady-like language, no wonder people keep telling me you're a bad influence." Liz smiled slightly, "It's the principle of the thing, though. I've never met him, I don't know what he looks like, I could hate him!"
"You could never hate anyone, and he's so sweet," Sarah tried to reason with her. "People said nothing but good things about him on my trip to Cheshire two summers ago."
"People can change. He's a prince for crying out loud."
"And you're a princess, but you're lovely. Your people adore you. This isn't a tragedy."
"Stop trying to ruin my fun, I enjoy hating him thank you." Patting down the finished braids, she turned in her seat and grinned. "You're always so good at this, you'll make a great mother one day y'know."
"Disgusting, shut your mouth." Turning from the boudoir, she made her way to clean up breakfast, ignoring the smirk on Liz's face.
"Oh come on. Maybe Prince Harry has a handsome manservant. Could be possible." Liz watched as Sarah purposefully ignored her, stacking dishes and keeping her back turned. "Oh come on, you're young and beautiful. I have to live vicariously through you."
"I am neither of those things and you would do well to stop trying to marry me off, my lady." Turning around, she made a funny face at Liz as she picked up the dishes. "Besdies, this week is about you, so go do your job and get ready to impress some royals."
"Disgusting," she mocked back, "thank god I can complain to you about it all day."
Just as Sarah made her way to the door Luke peeked in, looking apologetic. "Theresa's looking for you in the physician's quarters, Princess Elizabeth, and the prince sends for you Sarah. He's given Zayn the rest of the day off." Sarah huffed in response, while Liz began laughing loudly.

"Cheer up, buttercup," Harry insisted when he glanced over at Aliera, leaning over on his horse to nudge her. "We're nearly there and then you can get some rest."
"I don't want rest, I want to go home." Aliera grumbled loudly, patting her horse gently. "It's not fair; you're here to marry, Alice is here to maybe get married, I'm here for what? Entertaining the stable boy? Why did I have to come?"
"Don't be a spoil sport, Aliera. It's supposed to be exciting!" Alice chipped in.
Harry glared at his sister. "Alice, stop. Listen, it's a new experience. Some place you haven't seen or been. I know you love exploring; this is your chance. Please at least try."
She continued to stare at her horse, upset about all of it but knowing her brother was right. It was horrible knowing her brother was right and she refused to point it out, ignoring him until Alice had an outburst.
"Wait, who the hell would I be marrying?"
"Language!" Harry warned, "You're supposed to be a lady for fuck's sake."
"Yeah, so are you," Alice retorted, sticking her tongue out.
"Anyway," Aliera interjected loudly, glaring at them both. "It seems as though Prince Niall is to be crowned soon and needs a wife. You could get lucky."
"Please, Prince Niall fancies no one but his manservant."
"Alice!" Harry sighed in frustration, rubbing his temple. "Father is going to be so upset to find you coming home alone because you speak like a soldier."
"Yes Harold, because getting married is the most important thing in the world. I know you have to run a kingdom and everything but I don't, and I'm content to be who I like!" She explained proudly. Harry and a few of their escorts groaned, while Aliera laughed.
"Next she'll be talking politics and women's rights, god help her. There's a difference between being yourself and being ridiculous, Alice; we like that you care about things but you need to be careful about who knows." The eldest daughter was about to protest when their lead escort interrupted, pointing over the hills.
"There's the castle, my lord. I hope you're ready."

No matter how hard Louis tried to sneak up on his friend, he always managed to give himself away. The moment she heard the clanging of the chainmail hanging up, Dree looked up with a grin. "Afternoon, Louis! Good day so far?"
"The day could never be as good as you are fair, my lady," he spoke dramatically, brandishing a small bouquet of flowers.
Dree laughed delightedly. "Have you nothing better to do on your breaks besides speaking kindly to betrothed women? Surely there's something else you can put your time into."
"And where would be the fun in that? I have to keep Zayn on his toes while he's at the castle." Pulling a chair out from the corner, he gestured to it. "Take a seat, love."
She did as she was told, putting up her apron and sitting down. "Don't take too long, I'm expecting Liam soon."
Louis scoffed as he took her hair down from its bun, shaking out her curls with his fingertips. "Liam could do with a bit of wait, honestly. He's far too uptight."
"And you haven't sorted that?"
"Hardy har. Sit still you little brat."
Dree giggled to herself as he began to braid her hair, weaving the flowers in with her thick locks. Halfway through the process Liam wandered his way into the shop, watching in awe and contentment as her dark curls became covered in brightly colored flowers.
"All set, beautiful. Maybe Zayn will finally make an honest woman out of you," Louis joked, tying off her hair. "You alright, Liam?"
"Not as good as you, clearly. Having all sisters has seriously done your head in." Liam looked on in amusement as Louis pouted, falling into the chair Dree vacated.
"It's not quite finished because it needs a bit more reinforcing, but what do you think?" Pulling out a wide two-handed sword, Dree held it out for Liam to inspect. He looked pensive for a moment, feeling the weight and sharpness of the blade before nodding.
"No, it looks good. I think you've outdone yourself."
Dree beamed with pride as she took the sword back to the stand she'd had it resting on. "It should be finished tomorrow."
"So come back again, we wanna see your beautiful face Sir Liam." Louis teased. Liam raised an eyebrow, grinning slightly as he stepped further into the shop.
"If that's the case, I'll see that I make some time for you lot." Glancing around, he made sure no one was around before leaning down and pressing his lips to Louis' quickly. "I'll see you both tomorrow." With that he left them both in silence, heading back toward the castle where he was unable to hear Dree scoffing.
"I both love and hate how you two just ignore that I'm here." She muttered, smacking Louis over the head with a hand towel. "Get back to work and behave yourself, please."
