John Cage, Organ2/ASLSP (As Slow As Possible), 1987, performed on Halberstadt Organ, 2000-2639 (image source: www.nmz.de). First developed for a piano in 1985, Cage adapted the score for an organ in 1987. On an organ, any note can last infinitely long. For the Halberstadt performance, which started in 2000, it was decided to extend the piece to 639 years, because it was in 1361, then 639 years ago, that the world's first monumental organ was built in Halberstadt. which was exactly the age of the organ when it started playing.
