❝ You know, I can’t help but think that people who speculate about this sort of scenario between Encke and myself do so out of sheer ENVY of our relationship. I can’t say I blame you. It’s LOVELY, really, what my Encke and I have. It’s a relationship between two SOULS, one based out of total, complete, ABSOLUTE TRUST and UNDYING DEVOTION. Encke knows all of my secrets. I’ve told him my whole truth, even the UGLY PARTS, the parts that I hide from everybody else. And IN SPITE OF IT ALL, he still loves me. He holds my hand. Kisses me. CHERISHES me. ENCKE is the reason I’m a good person. He’s made me that way.
Also... I’m NOT A FAN of the insinuation always being that ENCKE would be the betrayer. Anybody who doubts him or his loyalty to me is somebody who CLEARLY knows NOTHING about him. Encke is the most loyal fellow I’ve ever met; he’s defended my honour on more than one occasion. He’s my prince. I know he CERTAINLY wouldn’t lead me on. Encke wouldn’t lead ANYBODY on in any way; he’d scarcely harm a fly. He’s the most gentle and BEAUTIFUL soul I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.
And if you’re attempting to SOW A SEED OF DOUBT in my mind ? Well, I’ll tell you right now––––IT’S NOT GOING TO WORK. Do you know what absolute zero is, nonnie ? Absolute zero, measured on the Kelvin scale, is the temperature at which all molecular motion ceases. Do you know what odds questions of this nature have in terms of making me doubt my Encke or the foundation of trust that our relationship is built upon ? The same odds that a molecule has of moving at absolute zero Kelvin. What I mean by that is–––– ❞

Keeler, normally so suave and composed and outwardly UNRUFFLED, no matter what’s going on, very nearly comes undone in the time it takes for Encke to mull over his answer before speaking. His throat is tight, palms sweaty, and it’s not until he hears that sweet, soft reply that he exhales a breath he didn’t even know he’d been HOLDING.
