Lonnie glared at the man who sat across from her. Barrett Trevino, the father of her child, and man who had ruined her life. “I never thought you’d be the one coming to visit me,” Barrett mumbled, looking down at his hands. He was having a hard time locking eyes with the woman, even to taunt her like he had usually done in the past.
“I didn’t think I’d ever come to visit you either,” Lonnie said. Barrett could see her nails digging into the flesh of her crossed arms. “But circumstances change when you knock me up and the baby gets kidnapped.” Barrett watched Lonnie quietly for a moment but she didn’t move an inch. Not even to scold him any further. “You know, don’t you? Either that, or you’re a colder asshole than I thought.”
Lonnie looked over to Cameron who sat a few seats down talking to Caige. The two were supposed to gather any relevant information but this seemed more like a mission to find out information to send to Shania about Caige. The girl was increasingly selfish, even in an instance like this. “I do know, yes. But there’s not much I can do here in jail. If you decided you wanted me in your child’s life then I’d have been there. I would have taken care of you, if you’d given me the chance.”
“Like you took care of your other daughter?” Lonnie challenged. She recalled a time in which Barrett had a woman come forward as the mother of his child. Barrett was callous and cold back then. Why would he be any different to Lonnie and her daughter? “You know what it looks like, right? Nobody knows how many kids you have all around the world with all the women you slept with.”
“I have one daughter with you,” Barrett stated. “As far as I know. That other woman you’re talking about was a leech who wanted my money. She didn’t have a leg to stand on with her case. Wouldn’t even take a paternity test. But I know you’re not lying. You hate me, and you’re not afraid to let me know that.”
“I’m not here to ask for your help with money,” Lonnie said. She leaned in closer to Barrett, glaring at him. “I don’t even want you to show your face to her. But I’m here swallowing my pride because my daughter has been kidnapped and I need your help. Shania thinks it has to do with Van Dyer and says he has a thing against you. Do I trust the girl who turned you in for her own personal gain? No.”
“Shania is playing with fire,” Barrett replied. “But, yes. Van does have Marcy and he says that the only way to get her back is if me and Bentley do as he says. So, let us handle it and she’ll be fine.”
“Got everything babe?” Barrett asked the not so small girl. He had lost two years with Marcy and was determined to make up for it by spending as much time with her as Lonnie had allowed. Though her birth wasn’t conventional, a mother and father who had loved each other before conceiving a little one to bring into the family, Barrett had found himself enamored with the child and her mother. They were his entire life.
“Yes daddy,” The girl babbled, reaching up to her father’s face to plant a wet kiss on his cheek. Only having Marcy on the weekends was tough. Barrett had gone into business with Bentley, but that only took up so much of his time. The man was lonely during the day, especially watching everyone he cared for start and build their own families. It was like he was forgotten in the shadows, and that might not have mattered to him two years ago but now having Marcy to love him, Barrett was finally convinced he deserved to be happy. “I stay?”
“No, your mom is coming to pick you up,” Barrett said. “I will see you next weekend. We can go see a movie and eat all the ice cream.” The weekends had always seemed to fly by too quickly, though he was at least happy that despite everything that had happened Lonnie allowed him to see his daughter.
Sure enough, Lonnie had walked up the driveway. 7pm on the dot as she always had on Sundays. She wanted Marcy to sleep early and so Barrett tried to stick to that schedule as much as he could. Though this time, as Lonnie approached the two she a suitcase in her grasp. “I was hoping that maybe we could stay the night with you? Maybe…maybe the week if things go well?” Lonnie asked, watching the man’s eyes sparkle. She’d be lying if she had said she didn’t feel a spark with Barrett, and he had been trying to be a good dad. Marcy absolutely adored him, so was trying to make it work a bad thing?
Barrett took a hesitant step towards Lonnie but stopped. “I love you, does that change things?”
“No, not much. I figure we both deserve to be loved,” Lonnie replied. “I’m here to give this a shot. You, me, and Marcy. It’s not going to be a fairytale but I’m ready to commit to it. So, please let me in. It’s cold out here.”
“Of course, yes,” Barrett replied, opening the door behind him. A door to his home, but also a door to his heart, and a door to the possibility of happiness in their future.

Ava sat down in front of the large blue and green painting, silently trying to figure out what it was supposed to symbolize. To her it just looked like someone walked into the green pain canister, knocked it all over the big canvas and then tried to wipe it up with a rag but ended up just spreading it around and staining the stretched fabric. She used to love art, but as time passed she felt her passion for it dwindling. Though she was happy with the life she had- she felt as if something big was missing. Looking down at her stomach, she knew exactly what it was.
If Ava could have a child of her own with Shawn, she’d be truly happy. Though, it seemed like that wasn’t what he wanted at all. Shawn was happy with the life they had- not even wanting to propose to her to take their relationship further.
Seeing her friends on social media boasting about wedding plans, honeymoons, pregnancies and the like made her jealous. She knew she had to talk to Shawn about it, but with a promotion and more hours of work they were hardly in a stable position. She had hoped that having Shania working at the Bridgeport police station alongside him would mean an easier time for her boyfriend but it did not. She wasn’t even in the same department as Shawn.
Letting out a large sigh she shut her eyes and tried to center herself. Being in an art gallery was supposed to have inspired her to create things and in creating things she’d fill the hole in her heart. of course she knew it didn’t work that way but what else could she hope for?
Ava heard fussing behind her- a little girl babbling loudly and her mother trying her best to quiet her daughter. Turning to look at her best friend and roommate, Ava put on her best smile though in her heart raged a jealous storm. She had wanted to be the one holding a child in her arms watching them giggle as her husband pinched their cheeks and made funny faces at them.
Ava placed Marcy to the ground and she toddled into her mother’s arms. The two of them were inseparable, and it made complete sense. With no family but Ava, Shawn and Shania in Bridgeport, Lonnie and Marcy often found themselves relying on each other for comfort. “I miss uncle Shawn,” Marcy pouted, jutting out her lower lip in a pout.
“He misses you too honey,” Ava replied, ruffling the girl’s hair, much to her dismay. Ava looked up at Lonnie. “She needs a male figure in her life and you need a good man to take care of you.”
“Nope,” Lonnie replied, shaking her head. “Me and Marcy are fine. We don’t need any man in our lives.”
“So, woman then. Anyone. You can’t be alone forever. Marcy deserves a family and it doesn’t have to be a conventional one.” As Ava said this, she could see the anger slowly cascading over Lonnie’s features. “I know you don’t want to have this discussion but...”
“No,” Lonnie snapped, leaning back into the black leather sofa. “Marcy doesn’t need another parent. I’m here for her. She’ll be lucky if she never knows that monster who’s supposed to be her dad.”
“Maybe he’s not a monster,” Ava mumbled, shutting her eyes. “Do you know that for a fact? I already told you what Shawn said.”
“He could be completely innocent in his case and it changes nothing,” Lonnie replied. “We were never a couple. We had a one night stand and weren’t careful.” Ava rolled her eyes at that one. She knew it hadn’t happened on only one occasion, but multiple. “You act like you didn’t know he has another kid with another woman out there in the world. He doesn’t care about having a family, I saw what he did with that other child.”
“You’re not the other woman though,” Ava replied. “Marcy isn’t that other child either.”
Day 3: Target has additional baggage today. This makes things difficult.
