Switchfoot & Lifehouse w/Brynn Elliott

It’s truly embarrassing how late I am in writing this concert review. I’m not totally sure why I’m so delayed but I think part of it has to do with the horrible security guy at the venue who practically ripped my camera out of my hand during the first song of Switchfoot’s set. Honestly. He was beyond rude. I’m not going to rehash it all here because even though I’m not over it, it doesn’t do much for the review of the bands. it did taint my experience though, which is likely why I haven’t written this until now. So, please be advised that after Brynn Elliott’s set the majority of the photos are from my phone, not my camera, which is why they're sort of meh.

Before the actual show started I got the pleasure of seeing part of Switchfoot’s soundcheck and doing a quick meet and greet with them. They are, without question, my favorite band, and I enjoy getting to do the VIP stuff with them whenever I can. I always meet the nicest people in line and that day was no exception. Switchfoot fans are just good people, that’s all there is to it.

Brynn Elliott opened the night and she was quite good. I’d never heard of her before but enjoyed her set. She had great stage presence, was a little sassy, easily interacted with the crowd, and had talent on top of that. She sang, played guitar and played piano. I can’t say that I loved all of her songs but I liked most of them, and was definitely entertained. Her band and backup vocalist were quite good as well. It’s no shock to anyone who follows this blog that the highlight of her set was the cover of a Switchfoot song, especially when Drew came out to play with her...made even better when Jon came out to sing with her. She knew about Drew but it seemed like Jon coming out was a surprise - this was the last show of the tour, so maybe he’d been saving that. It was cool and their voice blended very well together. I’d definitely see her again and will be checking out her music.

I’d thought this was Switchfoot’s tour and that they would be the closing band but they took the stage next and despite the camera incident - as it shall forever be called - they were, of course, fabulous. I never cease to be moved by their music and their performance is always memorable. The music, the words...this band just keeps getting better. They are truly on a mission from God, and I am here for every bit of it.

I don’t know where Jon finds all his energy, how he constantly runs around and jumps into the crowd - while singing! - but he does, and I appreciate it so much. He gives his all no matter if it’s the first show of a tour, the middle or the last. He was born to do this, as were the other members of the band. They may not jump into the crowd or climb scaffolding but they give everything they have every night. There is so much talent on that stage, it’s truly amazing.

They kicked off their set with Hello Hurricane and dedicated it to the victims of the hurricanes that happened shortly before the show. It was powerful, and I may or may not have shed a tear or two. Okay, totally did. Jason, the lead singer for Lifehouse, came out and did a song with them, and that was truly awesome. I’ve always loved his voice and hearing it on a Switchfoot song was cool.

They didn’t play nearly long enough for me and as always, left me wanting more. To be fair, they could play for four hours and it still wouldn’t be enough, but that’s how it is with favorites, right? We always want more.

It’s hard for anyone to follow Switchfoot, in my opinion. On more than one occasion I’ve left the show after Switchfoot played because I just don’t personally believe anyone can top their performance. And it’s nothing against whoever follows them, but they are my favorite so no one will ever compare in my mind. Lifehouse did a pretty great job as the closing act though.

It had been a long time since I’d seen them live and honestly, a long time since I’d listened to their music on a regular basis, so there were a few songs I just didn’t remember. But there were a lot more I did remember, and I was pleasantly surprised at the memories. Jason’s voice is amazing, and I’ve always loved listening to him sing. The music is good, from the notes to the lyrics, and the entire band sounded fantastic. It was fun to see them again after so many years and made me want to put their music back in the mix. Much like Switchfoot had Jason sing a song with them, Lifehouse had Jon sing with them as well. It was, of course, joys.

I’d forgotten just how many songs of theirs I loved. And I’d forgotten just how good they were live. Their performance was great, and they had the crowd longing for more, just like Switchfoot did. I suppose that’s the point, right? To leave us wanting more? Well, if so, then mission accomplished.
