cursed christmas || Kaitlyn & James
Kaitlyn woke up to the sound of the neighbor's kids playing in the backyard. She smiled a little at their carefree antics and burrowed further into her blankets, deciding to stretch out her morning in just a little bit longer. But that's when she heard it. A shout, from one of the children, clear as day: "Merry Christmas!" Damn it. Kait's eyes opened and she was forced to face the brutal reality of what today was: Christmas. And that might be a great thing for the majority of this town. For the majority of this town it was a day filled with love, joy, happiness. Santa Claus. But when you were an orphan like Kait, there was no one to celebrate with. No one to put up a tree with, or exchange gifts with, or hang stockings with. When you were alone, it was just another day. A day which Kaitlyn despised. With a sigh she emerged from her bed, shivering as the winter coldness that lingered in her apartment hit her. She made a B line for the kitchen, whipping up a hot cocoa with cinnamon in record time. She returned to her bed, mug in hand, wondering if she could just sleep through the day and wake up on perfectly normal December 26th. She grabbed her phone to check her text messages, and found that she didn't have any new, only one from James from yesterday. Her heart flipped in her chest as she saw his name, and she hated the organ for it. But she did wonder what he was doing today. Was he seeing family? Friends? Coworkers? She debated for a moment, wondering if this was something that people did, before deciding to throw caution to the wind and just do it. Kait took a sip of her cocoa as she typed out a message. [ text---> James ] Did you know that about 230 home fires are caused by Christmas trees every year?
