I was over at my parents’ last Sunday, and my mom talked for hours about her German studies. Contrast this with the fact that she’s barely even mentioned to my sister that she’s studying German (despite the fact that my sister has been studying various languages for years and could probably give her some helpful tips).
I’m aware that I tend to apply shitty intentions to actions and words which may not have any such malignant designs...but it seemed to me that she was legitimately trying to convey the idea that German is so monstrously difficult, far more of an achievement than Russian, which of course isn’t nearly as hard. (I’m going to stop downplaying my own studies; I was excited about finishing the first half of War and Peace, and told my dad about it, but when he was obviously impressed, I pointed out that Tolstoy’s writing style isn’t nearly as difficult as one might expect, which my mom probably took to mean that it’s so easy, she herself could sit down right now and read War and Peace in Russian without any difficulty. lmao)
She also asked me if I studied German before my trip to Germany.
...
You’ve heard me mention before that I almost always used German for simple transactions while in Germany (mostly ordering food). I’ve discussed German grammar and vocab with you. YOU WATCHED ME WRITING BLOG POSTS IN GERMAN WHILE WE WERE IN IRELAND.
She also intends to be capable of reading fluently in German by the end of a year (I’m sure I’ve heard that goal somewhere before...), but I honestly don’t know how she expects to do this when she doesn’t even read in English. In March alone, I read the first half of War and Peace (which is over 900 pages), plus two more novels; that’s why I’m gaining vocabulary so quickly. She hasn’t read a book in probably ten years.
I do understand what drives this weirdness, and from my reading on narcissistic parents, this is all pretty typical of a parent reacting to their ‘black sheep’ child, but there’s still a part of me that’s floored by it. It’s really embarrassing that you have entered into some sort of psycho competition against your child, a competition only you are even competing in.
Also, I think I should get credit for any of her progress in German. Because A. She always takes credit for my achievements (when she isn’t ignoring them) and B. I’m the only reason she’s studying it. lmao
