Until somebody beats the record-breaking bid in an auction for the work of a contemporary Asian artist, Ronald Ventura might always be known for his large-scale work “Grayground.” The 39-year-old artist has been painting and creating for many years now, but the Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings auction in Hong Kong in April 2011 proved to be an eye-opener—for art collectors and artists alike. Only two Filipinos to date have risen to the Valhalla of the international auction arena—or the Million-Dollar Club for artists whose works have hit the seven-figure mark. The first ever was Juan Luna, who, on his 145th birth anniversary on Oct. 27, 2002, scored the sensational price of $1 million in an international auction for “Parisian Life.” As controversial after death as he was in life, Luna’s record, for the highest price to be paid for any Filipino artist at auction, would remain unbroken until almost a decade later. Photojournalist Kim Komenich talked to many Filipinos, took their photos for his American newspaper and won the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution. But he forgot to say thanks to most of the people he had photographed. So 25 years later, he came back to the Philippines, tracked down the people in his photos, talked to them again and now he wants to show how grateful he is by going around universities and museums in the United States to show the photos that marked the highlight of his career and immortalized what he called the “grandfather” of people power revolutions.
