It's another one of them there pot-pour-ee episodes. This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, the main game-related topic is the HPL Historical Society's new Call of Cthulhu scenario The Spark Devil. Other topics include how angry Stu is about the horror film Loop Track, excitment for Predator: Badlands and more!
I don’t remember if I’ve watched kiwi horror before but I’m watching Loop Track.
From reviews, it’s a slow burn start but has a good twist and reveal at the end. Really hoping it pays off because nailing the payoff is the biggest trick with horror. Even if you have a really great set up, you can ruin it by failing the payoff. And when the movie relies on the way it makes you feel, the tension is like a string pulled tighter and tighter as you go along - and if you break it, it’s done for.
So far it’s not really giving the viewer enough information to think much of anything. I’m 40 minutes in and no danger has been established yet, just some weird signs. No one has even been hurt beyond a hiking blister.
The characters fit kinda funny, annoying archetypes. The main character says almost nothing and is very withdrawn. Definitely intentional, but it means you don’t really feel worried for him, or rooting for him, or feel…anything about him.
I also have no idea how hard the horror on this is actually going to go because nothing horrific has happened. I don’t think it’s going to be much of a scare. But there are other movies like Possum that don’t really have anything happen until it all hits at the end, so it can be hard to judge.
55 minutes in out of 95, no real danger or threat has been established. Just saw a dark shape in the woods a few minutes in to the start, and feels like something is watching him.
We mentioned our love of New Zealand horror in our latest episode - so here are some of our favourites! (These all at least have comedy elements because kiwis can't make horror without turning it into a horror comedy.)
Loop Track (2023) Dir. Tom Sainsbury A four-day journey turns into a fight for survival. This is a psychological thriller about Ian, who wants to get as far away from humanity as possible, into the New Zealand bush. Some other individuals get attached to him. And he has the feeling that they are being followed. Is that real though? Housebound (2014) Dir. Gerard Johnstone A young woman is forced to return to her childhood home after being placed under house arrest, where she suspects that something evil may be lurking.
The Frighteners (1996) Dir. Peter Jackson After a tragic car accident that kills his wife, a man discovers he can communicate with the dead, and he uses that gift to con people. However, when a demonic spirit appears, he may be the only one who can stop it from killing the living and the dead.
Black Sheep (2006) Dir. Jonathan King An experiment in genetic engineering turns harmless sheep into bloodthirsty killers that terrorize a sprawling New Zealand farm.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) Dir. Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are struggling with the mundane aspects of modern life, like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.
I've added these to a Letterboxd list also
