The Andrew Holness administration is still assessing whether it will need to implement another socio-economic programme next fiscal year to ease the fallout of the effects of the ongoing pandemic. “We continue to assess and make decisions that are consistent with those assessments,” Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr Nigel Clarke, said Wednesday in response to questions as to whether the COVID-19 Allocation of Resources for Employees (#CARE) Programme would be repeated in 2020-21. He was speaking at the monthly Mayberry Investor Forum which was held virtually. The temporary cash transfer programme to individuals and businesses was implemented at a cost of $10 billion with reports of about 435,000 Jamaicans benefiting from the programme up to December last year. The One Heart One Hill Foundation has come to the aid of Moya Sewell. The foundation made a donation of $350,000 on January 8, 2020. This is to assist her with her #Chemotherapy that will begin this month at the University Hospital. She was chosen by the foundation based on her needs. Although not a member of the community, her situation struck a nerve in the heart of the foundation whose motto is : Improving Lives one Heart at a time. Noting that there has been an increase in reports of point of sale (#POS) machines being stolen from business operators in recent weeks, the police are warning the public to be mindful of fraudulent activities involving POS devices. "Business operators and customers are asked to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police," stated an advisory from the police's Corporate Communications Unit on Tuesday. The police provided a few tips directed at both business operators and customers to combat fraudulent activities using POS machines. The Caribbean Examinations Council (#CXC) will again be delaying its #CSEC and #CAPE examinations for the 2021 sitting because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the disruptions it has caused to the traditional classroom learning experience for tens of thousands of students throughout the region. However, the regional examining body has indicated that it will not be reducing the content coverage of the 2021 CSEC and CAPE exams despite the pandemic which forced some changes to the 2020 format. Rather than reducing the content for 2021, CXC said it will be proceeding with a delayed sitting of the exams from May/June to June/July. Nearly one month after schools resumed classes online on October 5, hundreds of thousands of Jamaican students, more than half of the cohort in the public school system, are unable to access online learning because they are without a device that allows them to connect. This is according to President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (#JTA) Jasford Gabriel. Gabriel, who is also Principal of Manchester High School, told Loop News during an interview that a survey among 2,100 teachers at the end of the first week after classes resumed, found that only 40 per cent of students had a device such as a laptop or smartphone that would allow them to connect digitally. Opposition spokesman on Science, Technology and Information, Julian Robinson, has expressed concern at the fact that the Government (@msetgovjm) has failed to respond to calls from both the Opposition and leading private sector organisations for the temporary removal of duties and taxes on mobile devices to make them more affordable for struggling Jamaican families whose children are unable to continue their education online amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. “What I find particularly astonishing is that there has been no response from the government. There are about 10 groups that have made the call since my initial call and there has been absolutely no response from the government,” said Robinson during an interview with Loop News on Tuesday. Jamaica lost more than 54,000 jobs in the month of July alone, with males accounting for more than half of the individuals who had their job cut that month. According to just-released statistics from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (#STATIN), the largest decline for males was in the ‘elementary occupations’ and ‘crafts and related trades workers’ categories. The biggest tumble for females was among ‘service workers and shop and market sales workers’ and ‘elementary occupations’. Males accounted for 53.8 per cent of the decline in the employed labour force to leave a total of 620,100 males employed in July 2020 against 498,200 females. STATIN noted 1,118,300 employed persons in July 2020 would have worked for at least one hour during a specified work week.
