Odwalla Lorana - Prayer
currently emotional about how thrass’s efforts on outbound flight ultimately got him his dying wish 🥺😭😭
I can’t help but be intrigued by Lorana. Specifically her fate, because it’s so ambiguous. The only hint at what happens to her after the series is over occurs in Dragon’s Time, when a future Lorana visits Fiona in Telgar Weyr in order to draw her. This Lorana is years older, has a physical scar (potentially from Thread) on her face and is extremely sad. She speaks to Fiona and Jirana and leaves after she finishes drawing Fiona.
That is the only hint we have about Lorana’s fate, and it frustrates me sometimes. We have an idea of what happens to all the other major characters, but we know barely anything about Lorana. I get the impression though that she dies young, maybe while fighting Thread, so maybe she does some sort of heroic sacrifice and gets stuck somewhere, and then travels back in time to see Fiona one last time when she realises she’s going to die? Or maybe Fiona’s the one who dies and a grieving Lorana travels back in time to see Fiona again. Who knows. I just wish Lorana’s fate was made clear in the books.
Also, I know that most Pern fans don’t seem to like Lorana, but I like her for the most part. She’s compassionate, kind, selfless, with an intriguing power. That’s enough for me. Plus, I really enjoy her relationship with Fiona. And Lorana’s ambiguous and potentially tragic fate is also a draw for me, because I love how tragic it is.
(Though to be fair I don’t care much about the continuity getting changed and things being retconned. I mostly like reading the 3rd Pass books because of the characters, their relationships and interactions and the time-travel they get up to. Even if it’s unbelievable, I really enjoy seeing them figure out how to jump to all these different times.)
I did a bunch of sketches for my original fantasy story, Cohime. I'll post it over to @scribeofjiaal later, but I'm hanging out with the lovely rn
Zojak and Lorana ruin a Golf Game
Zojak felt his joy melt away. This purple forest that Lorana spoke of turned into a sterilized comfort zone for well-to-dos. He expected to see hundreds of bending tree-like organisms for miles, to see wildlife cover the tops and bottoms. It was instead quiet, nigh lifeless and a mockery of flora.
“Lor,” he inquired, rubbing his curly, fiery hair. “I thought you said this place was full of beautiful life. I just see short grass and boring people.”
“It used to be when I was younger,” she confessed, lowering her shoulders. “Looks like they turned it into this abomination of all things natural.”
“A golf course...”
“Afraid so. I guess the Flidians were desperate for money, and this was the best thing to ail them.” She sighed as her eyes turning away in defeat.
Zojak’s disappointment in this abrupt change of an environment he longed to see and Lorana’s melancholy made him sorrowful and sympathetic, understanding the loss of precious nature. That attitude changed as a small, golden ball beaned him in the head. Spurred by an ignorant man’s ball, his sadness turned to anger. Money or not, too much of the field was used as playtime for only a few.
“Lorana, if I tell you a plan that may not work, will you help me?” His voice was still calm, but his face was urgent.
“What are you thinking?” She looked down at him, brushing her dark hair away from her face.
“You remember those very slow moving garpniks we saw earlier?”
“Uh huh?” She paused and saw Zojak wiggling his eyebrows in a mischievous manner. “Oh no...” His eyebrows wiggled faster. “We are not going to do that.”
“Lorana, it’s the only way to get these country club dumbasses to get it. The garpniks already have nowhere else to go.” His voice softened. “If they’re going to go extinct, they at least the right to go down pissing off these guys.”
“You are so goddamn strange,” she sighed and crossed her arms. “But they do need a habitat. And it is fun to make rich people uncomfortable.” She smirked devilishly, and Zojak followed suit.
