Mid-nineteenth century illustrations of the Great Nebula of Canes Venatici based on the observations of William Parsons, Third Earl of Rosse. This pair of interacting galaxies is now designated NGC 5194 and 5195, and commonly called the Whirlpool Galaxy. The top image is one of the astronomer’s many drawings of the subject, while the bottom image is a color print adapted by an unknown artist.
