[ask] Councilman Shimura Danzo has Maito Gai in his office. He hands Gai a stack of empty Mission Report papers in folders titled MISSION REPORT [CLASSIFIED]. So Gai has some extras for the future. "Wait."

Danzo also hand him a stack of vacant Property Damage Report papers. "The Council and the Hokage came to an agreement this morning. From now on, any costs of property damage get taken out of your paycheck."

Danzo isn't done. He hands him pre-labelled pre-stamped envelopes.

"You are a shining example for the next generation. So to drive the point home, the property damage sustained by your team will be from your paycheck, too."

Danzo stoicly adds a pen to the stack, so Gai has no excuse to not fill them in. He is waiting for the reaction.

Only then, his eyes narrow to show his mirth, and his finger-licking glee. "Effective retroactively, for the past month."

He doesn't know what to expect when he's called into Shimura Danzo's office. A special request? A covert mission? It is strange -- he's rarely called for a personal audience with him, and he should expect it much less now that he has a team to take care of. Surely they wouldn't send him on a mission without his team?

Gai receives the stack of blank mission reports with his back straight, shoulders pulled back. He doesn't need these -- oh, property damage reports?

Something twists in his stomach as he hears Danzo's words. Gai blinks down at him, giving an uncomfortable smile in an attempt at placation. "Shimura-san, I don't think---"

He gets cut off by the envelopes getting smacked atop the pile, and the assertion that the damage from his team will also be from his paycheck.

"But---"

"---Effective retroactively, for the past month."

Gai is silent, his features morphing with an uncharacteristically glum pull. He supposes it's only right that he does pay for the damages he's caused. And he isn't going to complain about his team's damage being pulled from his paycheck -- he's not going to expect his precious genin to use their meagre salary to pay for repairs -- not when two of them especially need the money.

But retroactively?

This is not a request. It's not a mission. It's just extortion.

Not even in a funny way, not the way Minato-sensei used to provoke him teasingly but pat him on the back at the end of the day and tell him that he did well. Danzo's eye was filled with mirth, but something about it doesn't feel friendly to Gai.

He straightens again, and looks Danzo in the eye, before bowing. "Rest assured I will return these forms, filled, by the end of tomorrow."

"What were the words of that Uchiha boy again? Something something, do not betray your friends. I could be irritated with you for sending Senju Tsunade my way... But. Well. That would be like being angry with myself.

"We both learnt that betraying one's closest friends does pay off. Killing them, earned each of us a Sharingan eye. And this time, putting the Senju on the red chair saves both of us from doing paperwork. We are not so different, you and I."

He's never had any lack of certainty regarding his character flaws, nor of the result said flaws rendered. It was a common enough fact that he was a terrible friend, a worse comrade and his actions did indeed lead to the deaths of those that he once considered to be his friends. A spear can be used as a walking stick, but that doesn't change its nature and the scribbles etched into his shinobi records did not lie. But the Godaime was also a shinobi, with her own will and despite what the old war hawk implied (and what she herself might believe) he doubted that he could make the Senju so much as cock a brow, did she not want to. He could agree with the elder on one thing though, he would not want to sit behind the desk that she inherited.

"Aaa, I would be so lucky for our similarities to end there, Lord Danzo. Paper cuts are rather annoying things with their persistent sting, they might make it difficult to turn the pages of Jiraiya-sama's next literary wonder."

“You amuse me, I think I’ll keep you.”

There was still a laugh lingering on Kagami's lips, the weight of nothing on his shoulders as he felt so carefree talking about all the little things, about the fun little memories and the plans for the future.

But it was exactly the last one that prompted Danzo to say such a thing and it made that laugh freeze and then die into startled confusion. The way he said that with such seriousness, not even a smirk on his face made it almost feel like a threat- and yet Kagami wasn't sure if it really was. "Ha-.. uhm. That's quite an odd thing to say, Danzo."

Especially when often the other instilled it into Kagami that they are friends, comrades. Keeping someone either has the taste of keeping a slave-... or a partner. Though this thought did make him grin then, leaning in, teasingly close into his friends personal space. "Or-.. are you falling in love~?"

"Happy birthday." He does not mean it. He is just passing by, as a jab.

"I like your newest work. It's good. It's solid. You're onto something, jounin Orochimaru. Keep pursuing." Rare praise should taste sweet.

He was on edge.

Rather, he was on the edge. He'd just got back from the frontlines not two days ago and was knee deep in his research. Do not get him wrong, he thrived in this state of being. Simply existing on the precipice of sleep deprivation induced frenzy and mania. The only evidence of his state was the compulsion burning within his eyes. They blazed with an intensity that even had his teammates treading carefully around him.

They were never quite supportive of his..... studies, as it were.

Midday found Orochimaru with a rather thick file under his arms, walking the halls of the Intelligence Division, intent on consulting one Yamanaka Inoichi who might shed light on a working hypothesis. It was there, where Danzo had cordially stopped him. The jounin inclined his head in greeting, out of respect. Jiraiya, he knew if the oaf was even here, would be glaring at the 'Old War Hawk', he'd so very eloquently put it. Orochimaru was about to speak, an offer of a polite greeting and an apology for his haste (he really needed to catch that Yamanaka), but Danzo had broken the silence.

Orochimaru was...taken aback, really. His eyes widened just a fraction. It certainly was scarce that the man offered praise, and even more so, to offer encouragement. Yet, Orochimaru was always a bit on the more reserved side, taking any praise with a grain of salt. This would be no different, but he did allow himself to bask in it... Just a little bit.

Especially after his latest stint on the battlefield. "Thank you, Danzo-sama. I intend to do just that." His voice was hoarse from disuse and he proffered a shallow bow. "If you'll excuse me? I have a consultation I must attend."

"This village needs a strong leader. And that means, strong subordinates. Enough of this spying on Orochimaru. Come back to the village, soldier."

He knew exactly what he was getting into when Lord Orochimaru told him to start spying on the Hidden Leaf for him. Even though Kabuto told him about his worries about Root, Orochimaru assured him that Danzo was not allowed to harm a hair on him if he wants to keep their alliance to take down the Leaf.

Even so, that didn't also mean that the old man can send his subordinates after him to attempt to persuade him into rejoining their side. It's equally frustrating when they can also make passing glances and talks and he can't do anything about it unless he wants to destroy his cover if he lets his emotions get the best of him.

Walking past the old man at a night walk, he only stopped for a moment as he listens to their offer. Betray Orochimaru and return to ROOT? Do they know exactly why he was with Orochimaru to begin with? Would they even be making this offer if Mother Nonou was still alive as well? Why do they even need him if they wanted to get rid of him in the first place? Damaged goods is what he is now, and it disgusts him that Danzo now knows about it and wants to exploit that for himself.

Like hell he will go back to that traitorous ungrateful liar.

He offers them one of his fake smiles as he shrugs his shoulders casually, "Nah, I'm good where I am... for now. Orochimaru takes good care of me and saw my value way before you did. But your offer is a bit interesting if you actually keep your promises from now on. "You see, I have been questioning my own loyalty to Orochimaru these days so I'll think about it. You just keep that old Hokage of yours distracted from our plans and let us handle the rest. Who knows? What if I do decide to betray Orochimaru by the end of all of this? Until then, have a nice night."

Never. Never again will he trust him nor ROOT ever again. He'll kill them all when the time comes.

"Doesn't feel good, does it?" He's clearly not happy Danzo still breathes. He hasn't even tried to make his tailing look anything but intentional.
