Okay, it’s been 3 days and I have yet to see any of my mutuals comment on this yet, so can we please talk about this scene in the NY special?
So here we have Marinette walking through NYC in the rain after Chat Noir renounced Plagg and his Miraculous. As we can see, it’s in the base look it had when Adrien gave it up; the way it looks without an owner.
When a Miraculous has no owner/holder/wielder the kwami either gets locked inside or is banished to the world of the Miracle Box. Considering no one knew where Nooroo or Duusu were, I’m assuming if the jewel isn’t in the Miracle Box then the kwami does not go into that little pocket dimension and is instead locked away within the Miraculous, as it were.
Point being, Plagg isn’t around because he was “locked” within the ring at this point. Which is why, when Adrien accepts the ring again, Plagg is “released” from the jewel once Adrien puts it on.
Again, just before this, the ring was the default black and only went in “disguise mode” when Adrien put it on, released Plagg, but remained in civilian form.
So let’s go back to this shot and this scene:
If the ring is in the default, how is Plagg hiding with Tikki in Marinette’s purse????
Whoops....
Buuuut, what if this isn’t a continuity error? Because there’s one other time that the cat ring isn’t in disguise mode: after Plagg has touched it.
Even after Marinette has worn it, once Plagg touches it the ring goes into its default look.
So, hear me out.
Plagg was renounced, so he was absorbed into the ring until a new wielder was found.
Plagg was later in Marinette’s purse, which meant a “wielder” had to have been found. AKA Marinette.
However, when she’s holding the ring in the rain it isn’t in disguise mode - which would either be silver/chrome/white gold/whatever for Adrien and rose gold for Marinette
Which means, after he was released from the ring, Plagg had held it and no one else wore it again until Adrien put it back on.
However, Plagg was also released from the ring, not traveling with it, which means MARINETTE also had to renounce Plagg to lock him inside.
What if Marinette tried to use both Miraculouses to help restore Paris or find out who her Chat Noir was, and only just managed to be talked down from the ledge by Plagg and/or Tikki; reminded of how dangerous using their joint powers to make a wish was. Plagg then takes the ring from her in a manner similar to taking a gun out of someone’s hand.
Or, what if Marinette wore the ring specifically to release Plagg and then handed him the ring, a la the above gif, in hopes that he could return it to Chat Noir for her? I’ll have to think more upon this option as to why he didn’t follow through and why Marinette instead states the defeated line “He made his choice. What were we supposed to do?”
I’m not sure what happened in that sewer after Adrien left and Marinette picked up his abandoned ring, or during her walk through Manhattan in the rain, but I feel like there’s a story there that I need to figure out.
