Oh this is something I'm awfully excited to ask you but I keep on forgetting!! But anyway, if you'll create an alien race based on bugs in dragon ball how would you go about it? Like what would be the most important detail do you think they should have? (I want to ask you about specifics of that race too but I don't want to pressure you on answering since I'm sure that would be long. Just an idea of what an alien bug race can be would be awesome!)

THIS IS SUCH A GREAT QUESTION..... because it makes me think so hard i can't think of anything conclusively :') first up is- would this insect race be one species? one family? one order? or just a mix of all different kinds? there's literally around a million insect species and almost 30 orders that are INCREDIBLY diverse in form. i don't want to paste every single example here but here's just the silhouettes to give you an idea!!

but also i could just. make up a new bug entirely?? 😳 like just smash together my favorite characteristics from across the insect world... what sounds good to me atm is cool wings (i like plain membranous more than the scaly wings of butterflies/moths, you can get cool patterns with them too), the general horse shape of a mantis/snakefly and sound producing organs (insects make noises in different ways! crickets stridulate by rubbing their wings together, cicadas expand/contract their tymbals, hissing roaches compress air through their spiracles). i like the idea of insects singing to communicate, it's pretty much only to attract mates or scare predators but i think it's a generally romantic idea :'3 i also think it's cool to consider aspects of physiology, like insects have an open circulatory system (their organs are bathed in hemolymph instead of supplied by vessels), they have a more decentralized nervous system (can still get around despite lots of their body missing), they can overwinter, among other things. oh i think i'd also like them to be holometabolous (larva>pupa>adult rather than a nymph that gradually sheds into its adult form) because i want to see proud parents holding their cute little worm babies :3c

in terms of dragon ball i can say what i won't do- toriyama i'm making a callout post on tumblr dot com- there are insects other than cicadas (although i LOVE cicadas) but i am tired of these things

it is a real structure found among the true bugs (order hemiptera, includes aphids, leafhoppers, cicadas, etc.) called a cibarium which basically houses the big muscles the herbivorous members use to suck up plant juices. SUCK, you say?? yeah these things don't have chewing mouthparts so shut your weird beak mouth, cell. you're supposed to be sucking up people with that instead. their mouths have been modified into straw things called a rostrum which you can barely see under the cibarium of that cicada. if i had to make an alien race based off these kinds of bugs, their mouths would remain rostra and i'd definitely have them communicate through sound production only. that would be hella cool.

(also while we're on the cell callout train, cell's wings are based off the shell of a beetle which are technically called elytra but THERE'S ALSO SUPPOSED TO BE MEMBRANOUS NORMAL WINGS UNDERNEATH! insects typically have two pairs of wings and the shell of a beetle is just the hardened first pair.)

hehe sorry that went on for a bit. take some bonus doodles that this inspired although i wouldn't consider these examples of a sentient alien race. i really like snakeflies and think they're adorable OTL

Important question! If given flowers, who do you think between goku, gohan, and goten would: smell the flowers (then maybe put it in a vase), plant the flowers again, and eat the flowers? :))

Goku would plant the flowers, he wants them to last forever. I think he’s the type that appreciates permanence where he can get it. Also he likes the flowers and wouldn’t mind seeing them every day for the rest of his life.

Goten would smell the flowers. He would not know how to plant them, and maybe the smell is really good, but the longer he stares at them, the more his thoughts tell him he will get in trouble with his mother if he tries to eat them.

Gohan… Gohan will eat the flowers. He knows most flowers by their scientific name and he knows which ones are edible or not. He will be the first to test whether they will best a half-saiyan digestive system or whether he now has poisoned himself

6) Which saga is your favorite? 

UHMMM Right so - The Great Saiyaman Saga is my favourite because of the low-stakesness of it, and seeing Gohan interact with the rest of the world, I love all the worldbuilding snippets! But, I don't think it would work as a standalone series, as I feel you need the rest of the show to really understand why it's a good breather? It's the eternal conundrum of loving slice-of-life fantasy, really hard to pull off without knowing the full stakes.

So if I was going to pick standalones, I'd pick the standalones that I did watch, which was The Saiyan and Namek Sagas. I hadn't seen Dragon Ball when I started watching DBZ but picked it up quick, and I thought the arc of Goku "suddenly you're an alien and dead", and the Vegeta/Goku battle, and how Vegeta grows into the main cast and is against Frieza making this complex set of alliances, I thought that was smashing! Plus Frieza was great to hate!

9) What is your favorite fight?

If I had to rewatch or reread, I'd probably go for Cell Saga Gohan fight, as it's so gut-wrenching. But if I have to pick one that's stuck with me, it was Trunks' entrance in "Another Super Saiyan?". Imagine watching that at like, 12 or 13 with no idea who Trunks is, just this cool dude with a great haircut (for the time) who shows up and one shots the guy they barely took out in the previous saga? That sword slash is iconic, and it blew my fucken mindddd

How it was summarised at "real speed" in SuperHero really gets it across, too - that cut cut cut lull - BLAST - yea! So it's fave for being so out of nowhere :)!

17) Which anime ending is your favorite?

I don't recall the DB/Z/GT ones, I'm not sure what we had in the UK as we'd have to be dragged out of my grandparents' house a few minutes before the show ended so no nostalgia there!

So my love is with the Super ones! I love the video for Hello, Hello, Hello by Good Morning America the most - that beginning montage (though I can never work out Goku's neck at the end? I think his chin makes his neck look h e n c h haha)This song is also super uplifting to me? Very hopeful.

But an equally good banger is Forever Dreaming by Czech no Republic :) Can bop bop bop along to this one

And while I'm here. I totally would prefer if Gohan wouldn't be in any fights anymore but if they did force him, I think he shouldn't get anymore crazy transformations that's obviously hard on him mentally (esp since they're all just nostalgia trips anyway). I have an HC that the transformations tunes up their senses to the max and that's why Gohan can see better after transforming and why he turns arrogant and/or wild in battle, being more reckless and making ill decisions. The toll on his mind and body is preventing him to make sound judgements. The other saiyans have less problems with this because they love almost everything that a battle brings and makes them feel, but Gohan is different. His complicated relationship with fighting prevents him to find the mental balance that the others have. He did choose a grounded lifestyle for this reason.

This is a SUPER interesting headcanon, and def makes a lot of sense

Gohan’s emotions have always seemed pretty highly linked to his powers, and well. Power upgrades clearly effect everything else on the body (they get all big and muscly, their eye color changes, hair grows and changes color) so it would only make sense that their senses get better too !!

And to constantly go back and forth with that, maybe it *does* take a toll on gohan— he’s the first half-saiyan-half-human, so he’s pretty much setting every precedent. Maybe he’s a lot stronger but his body/ psyche isn’t as built to handle it, or he was traumatized too much too early and wasn’t able to build his way to enjoy fighting, so it took a toll that way—

Either way I agree, he did choose a more realistic lifestyle because he didn’t have an interest in fighting for the rest of his life lol

I love Videl with my entire heart but to see how they showed more of Gohan and Videl's relationship and her importance in Gohan's life and less of his bond with his own little brother who also only appeared in the same saga makes me so sad to no end. We knew more about her and how she is with Gohan and we know of Gohan with Goten or just Goten in general. It's like Goten was made to be snubbed right at the start. (Actually I can say the same with Chi-chi)

Am I just imagining a non-existent problem? It is just me being sensitive at any downplays of platonic and familial bonds to cater for romance? Did they purposely do it to show how macho Gohan is? I am aware of my personal biases in consuming fiction but this I'm nonetheless sad about this

Okay, as someone who loves goten a lot I am maybe biased too but I totally agree !!!!

We missed out on a lot with them barely giving any tidbits about goten— I’d have loved to see more about goten and gohan being brothers, their actual dynamic outside of just excited little brother and mature older brother…like there’s no way they never fought once !!! Or gohan being a guardian figure for goten, helping him with anything like school stuffs too would have been really nice to see.

And like, they gave us little details about how talented goten is and how much potential he has and then immediately sidelined him !!! He’s only relevant when it’s in a side character role with trunks, goten, or goku/chichi as the main role. It’s such a disservice to his character !!! Baby scrimbly boy deserves better !!!

There’s nothing wrong with gohan having a romance but I REALLY feel like buu saga had a lot of … stuffing. In it. A lot of really non-important things that could have easily been taken out and made the arc better. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Buu saga focused on all the things I didn’t care about and completely skipped over the stuff I wanted to see more of!! LOL

So. Yes you’re not the only one. In fact, I am of the opinion that Toriyama has a weird thing against siblings because every sibling ever gets sidelined so hard— and that’s if they’re lucky enough to not have been killed
