Let the Love in
The Standard Miami has so many opportunities to guide it’s guests to better health, like their outstanding Integral Living Team. Lori Bell is the onsite acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine expert. Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that treats patients by insertion and manipulation of needles in the body. It has proven effectiveness in relieving pain, treating infertility, treating and preventing disease, or promoting general health (thanks Wikipedia).
Lori explains that Chinese medicine is not only physically beneficial, but also can lead to better emotional and spiritual health. When treating a patient, Lori evaluates the person’s whole lifestyle in order to provide the best care.
Every month Lori offers a group acupuncture session rightly entitled, “Stick Together for the Full Moon.” Lori participated in the largest group acupuncture group ever, Acufest. According to Hinduism, during the full moon emotions and sensitivities are brought to the surface making everyone more emotional. This is the reason it is the ideal time to experience the healing powers of acupuncture
Lori is known for being a top acupuncturist and for her infertility work. A 20 year native of Miami Beach, Lori has been part of the Standard Integral Living Team since its inception.
In addition to offering acupuncture treatments, Lori is an Astrologist and offers a monthly Astrology talk called Zodiac Lounge with Ron Akanowicz. In July, Lori and Ron will host a four week, "Astrology Summer School" course, which will cover the basic components that make up the language of astrology; planets, signs and houses. Astrology Summer School runs for four weeks on Wednesdays from July 13 through August 3 at 7:30pm. Cost is $180 for all four classes. Complimentary introduction to Astrology Summer School is Wednesday July 6 at 7:30pm. RSVP to [email protected]

Capricorn
Meet The Standard, Miami’s residential acupuncturist who sticks needles in peoples bodies all day long, makes you feel "stoned in the best way possible” and will maybe even let you know if your Capricorn boyfriend is a good match.
The Standard: How did you get into doing Acupuncture?
Lori Bell: I worked in fashion for a while and it had no soul. One day I went to a reading of a Taoist master and he kind of planted the seed. I went to him hoping to hear that I would fall in love and live happily ever after. Instead he told me to be an acupuncturist.
And just like that you became an acupuncturist?
No, it was six months later that everything worked out in a way that acupuncture became what I was meant to do. I began studying theory and the academics of it – at first I couldn’t even needle anyone! I thought to myself, “what am I doing!?” Once I got over it, it was extraordinary; I started working with paraplegics and people with AIDS and was able to really better their lives. It wasn’t about necessarily curing them completely, but about making their lives better. Someone with chronic migraines might not get rid of their headaches entirely, but they’ll feel better. Afterwords I started my journey, traveling to China and Tibet and working with a medical group. A few years later I began working with women who had trouble getting pregnant – it was ironic, I went from death to birth.
Explain acupuncture to us; what does it actually do, how do a few needles help?
I like to think I’m this cosmic gardener. You don’t need to have a certain ailment to come see me. Our bodies are always changing and we are always adjusting to new stress and challenges and I help balance that out. After a session with me you kind of feel stoned in the best way possible. The needles help kick in the endorphins; it wakes up the body’s own natural wisdom.
What’s the first thing you do or ask when a patient comes to see you?
First I observe them; I look at how they walk, how their eyes twinkle, and how they interact with me. Everybody has their own personality and energy; seeing whether they are a wood, metal, water –
Wait – what are you talking about?
You should really read this great book my friends wrote called Between Heaven + Earth; it explores Chinese medicine in a very modern way. It pretty much explains how everyone falls into a certain category, you are either fire, wood, metal, water, or earth.
What are you?
I want to be a fire that’s trying to get through life as a wood.
How does indicating what element you are help you navigate through life?
On the low level its about getting out of pain, the middle level its about finding your path and on the highest level is about destiny. I do a few workshops here at The Standard where I divide the room into different groups, each element for each group. It’s so funny to see the similarities within the groups. I really like working with groups; there is something extraordinary about the collective experience.
And what about astrology? How does that fit into everything?
Since I was really young I was into astrology and so I started a Zodiac Lounge here at The Standard. Send me your birthday and the time of your birth and I’ll do a reading for you. But you should definitely try to come to the next Zodiac Lounge – so much fun!
