It was a dark morning. Thunder rumbled beyond the dark curtains that adorned the cracked window. The breeze was welcome, the summer had been too hot and the roses of Gloucester were wilting early — a setback to trade agreements, even with the storm, but it was not an unmanageable disaster.

It wasn’t even what occupied Lorenz’s thoughts as he lay awake in bed, watching Marianne’s slight frame rise and fall with each comfortable breath.

Pale blue curls bristled under Lorenz’s fingers, cool and beguiling as the sea.
