“Dance On A Volcano / Los Endos” - Genesis live
“Dance on a volcano” is arguably one of the best Genesis songs from one of their best albums. And that after the “low-blow” of having lost one of the most ingenious artists of the 20th century as their frontman: Peter Gabriel. Enter Phil Collins who stepped from behind the drum-set into the spotlight and proved everyone wrong who claimed that “Genesis is dead” without Peter Gabriel. We can certainly argue about whether the “classic” Genesis era ended with Steve Hackett’s departure only a few years later but Phil Collins proved that he was not only one of the most influential drummers of rock-history, but also an electrifying entertainer. In many aspects a more natural singer than PG ever was, and also a much more natural performer, Phil managed to add a touch of light-heartedness to the always inherent sense of quirky humor that was smoldering under the thick layer of drama and seriousness. It’s the balance. And “Dance on a volcano” is the perfect example. Here in a (still) pretty impressive version after Hackett’s departure with Daryl Stuermer on guitar
