“Ganaron los Marleengs?”

What my step-grandfather, Benigno, is trying to ask is “did the Marlins win?” His accent likes to get in the way.

Benny tries to watch all 162 Marlins games, unless they conflict with Sunday mass. He grabs the sports section of the Miami Herald, wheels his oxygen tank to the couch, and puts on the game. Shortly after sitting down he falls hard to sleep. This is when my grandmother and I have our fun.

I put on a scandal saturated HBO show and explain to my abuela that the naïve redhead is fucking Mr. tall dark and handsome, but he also happens to be sticking it to his manipulative boss, that is of course married to the holier-than-thou mayor, who may or may not be dating his male assistant. My grandmother guffaws at the silliness of it all, as I give her half of my Negra Modelo. We sink into the raunchy storyline for the next half hour until Benny’s snoring stops. I hit last, just as Benny wakes up.

“Ganaron los Marleengs?”

“Si, si. Ganaron.”
