can we talk about how in the rapping parts at some points Vessel is almost practically just speaking. like. i was sitting listening to the song and wondering why i have a feeling of listening to something i’m not supposed to hear. something private. a similar feeling to being jumpscared by the band’s members’ names or faces.
i think it’s because it feels like this man is just sitting right next to me and speaking in his normal voice. help.
me: i will listen to different songs while walking today
me: *proceeds to set emergence on repeat*
i don't want to dissect the lyrics and talk about the personal side of the song, plenty of people have done it already, better than i would. can we talk about the music? the core reason why we're here now, and why we came here in the first place.
this song is fucking amazing. it's so different from everything else they've done up until this point. pop, rap, metal parts, each pushing far into their genres. and somehow, it all works together.
the first verse and chorus are so very pop that if i didn't know who sleep token were and heard it somewhere i wouldn't bat an eye. a nice tune, breezy, exciting, makes you want to dance a little.
which, when you listen into the lyrics, you realize there is a crazy, conflicting contrast in moods. masterfully done. the emotion it creates is so complex, and so difficult to put into words, that your mind can only read it intuitively as an intangible concept, yet so familiar and relatable.
then the second verse. vessel's rapping works so well with ii's drums. they're in sync, they were made for each other. i'm honestly very excited about this rap/hip-hop direction we're getting in this album—vessel is a great lyricist, and his ability to write so poetically and play with metre and rhyme really shines here. it's hypnotyzingly satisfying to listen to.
and of course i can't ignore the gradual, almost unnoticeable (becaus of how well-paced it is) buildup of music throught the second verse and into the chorus. a classic move, but that doesn't make it less impactful.
we're back to the pop in the bridge. i can't get over how throughout the first half the music builds into something epic and almost hopeful, yet the lyrics contrast that, again.
and now we're plummeting down into the metal part. i would argue it's one of the heaviest pieces sleep token has ever had in their songs. i'm not a song reviewer by any means, so i'll allow myself to say, it's fucking insane. and especially after the first half of the bridge, it hits especially hard. it's grating, in a good way. and the way it's mixed with the epic/hopeful music parts from before? absolutely diabolical. i feel like i'm drowning.
the outro? someone on here noticed how it ends abruptly as if someone (the listener, presumably) shut the music box, hence the background music. i have nothing to add to that.
now you're left to sit in silence and wonder what the fuck just happened and how do you move on from this.
the emotional side and meaning of this song is something that touched me very deeply and made me cry. i see people saying they may not be able to listen to this song casually/as part of their regular playlist. and i totally get that, but there is no way i'm resisting 100+ replays of it because musically it's such a fascinating sleep token song that the pain and devastation is worth it.
i was struggling to understand what was it about the new masks that felt off to me. and it finally hit me—individuality. with the previous masks ii, iii and iv felt like distinct characters. and now with the new ones they're all the same. again! just like it used to be with the og black masks.
can’t believe the top 1 song is by dead poets society. yes i listened to it a lot but i was convinced high water or ascensionism would surpass it ☠️
gamechops lofi in top 5… this wasn’t my year yall
but hey at least i’m in a top 4%
i started working on this nearly 2 months ago and i'm absolutely terrified of coming back to it but. haven't been able to stop thinking about this artwork lately. so maybe??? we'll see smth soon
