alright you asked and i shall deliver!! (because this post started to get confusing, every photo with a blue mark in the top right-hand corner on it will be the english version and every photo with a red mark will be the original korean) read more because this got really really l o n g
so! there’s two things i’d like to talk about: the lyrical messages of both songs and the differences in musicality (ie the lyrics are different and the instrumentals are different and what i feel like that means))
let’s start with the lyrics. i’m sure you’ve listened to both, but here’s the lyrics for the english version and the translated lyrics for the korean version. i’m well aware english translations can be shaky at best, but please bear with me.
the lyrics relay completely different messages. take the chorus, this next set of lyrics is from the english version.
this chorus repeats throughout the entire song. it stagnates, he says the same words over and over again ‘cuz baby in your game of love, i know i’m gonna lose’.
but! in the korean version (aka the original) only the first chorus keeps this type of message. every single chorus after it changes. i’m sure you can hear the change from the first to the second chorus.
‘the moment you come back to me, you lose’ this change stays for the rest of the song (the four other times he repeats this part.)
lyrically, it feels like the messages of the songs are inherently different. the original changes, it grows from being soft and melancholic and resigned in the fact he knows he’ll lose. there’s much more growth to the lyrics in the korean version. like take the verses for an example:
the english version stays so soft and almost painful. the line that sticks out to me the most in the original korean is the ‘right, it’s been enough’. that’s exactly the point where the song changes. the original korean prechorus changes whereas the english version prechorus doesn’t.
(the final prechorus of the original korean has the ‘this is the end of us’ line. )
anyway, i apologize for all the pictures of the lyrics. basically the point i’m getting at with the lyrics is the growth and the change of message.
the english version is hopeless and he is resigned to the fact that he’ll lose, he’s saying ‘i just want to watch you leave because i know i can’t do it’. the repetition of the words in the verses was likely just to keep pace with the song, but it also could have been used as a way of emphasizing the impact of his words and to create a more painful and emotional atmosphere. i honestly can’t tell the purpose.
the original korean version so much more complex. it starts out the exact same (save for some minor lyrical differences that come with it just being in a different language). the ‘right, it’s been enough’ line is where the switch happens, it’s like he’s deciding then and there that he’s had enough and that he’s not going to the be the one that loses. it’s not any less intense and emotionally weakened, the song is still incredibly dark and painful, but it’s like he’s decided that if he’s gonna play your game, you’re gonna play his. he’s making sure that you lose just as much as he does.
oh boy that was a lot. anyway, onto the musicality differences. i’m sure at this point you’ve listened to both versions, but if you haven’t, you might wanna do that.
it’s a bit hard to go into exact differences but here’s a general run down.
in the intro section, the original korean has a hit of some percussion instrument before the guitar part comes in and once the prechorus starts, there’s the snapping, i believe there’s another guitar part added in, and there’s other sound effects that build up to the chorus.
the intro section of the english version is completely different. first of all, there’s no percussion hit before the guitars come in and they’re much softer. the prechorus also doesn’t add anything beyond again another guitar part, though there is still that build up that happens going into the chorus. also there’s birds in the english version??? i’m serious you can hear birds flying around in the very beginning.
the next section i’m gonna cover is the second verse and the differences in the chorus from a musical standpoint.
the original korean doesn’t even start the violin part until much later, like not even in the second chorus im talking in the bridge. i can’t tell if that’s just another guitar or if that’s just a keyboard added in, but whatever it is, there is something in the first part of the second chorus that wasn’t in the entire first chorus. (btw because the second and third chorus double in length im going to refer to each as like the ‘first/second part of the second/third chorus’)
the violin part starts in the english version right before that second prechorus starts, which is much, much earlier than in the korean version. and in the second part of the second chorus, the violins come back!! i love the violin part oh my god it’s gorgeous.
and the final thing i wanna talk about is the bridge (i’m gonna call it the bridge but it’s kinda just like the prechorus, it’s the part between the second and third chorus) as well as the post chorus (the post chorus is just where he says ‘don’t wanna lose’ over and over again lmao. i’m not gonna go too much in detail on the third chorus because frankly it’s not that exciting.
the differences in the bridge are one of the first things i noticed being incredibly different. there is a part in the original korean where the violin part starts as well as a building of percussion hits to build tension and create some drama in the instrumental. that percussion part is completely missing. it’s just straight up not there, the only thing in the bridge is the violin.
also!! the post chorus, there is yet another guitar part (he really likes those apparently) in the original korean version that is again just straight up not there in the english version.
so now that i’ve gone in length about the musical differences, let’s talk about what they all mean. the english version is missing a lot of components that add ✨drama✨ and the fact that the beautiful violin part is much more prevalent in the english version which all together i think really fits the idea that the english version is the softer, more resigned, and not as cruel version.
tldr: lose in korean is somewhat cruel and vengeful, whereas lose in english is more sad and miserable :D
