Lost Things Excerpt: Dawn of the First Day
Sylvia took stock of what she still had left. It didn’t take long - her puffy white shirt that cut low down the front in stereotypical pirate fashion, the jeans that went up to her belly button and had previously been light brown until the murky water darkened them, her underclothes, and a single gold pendant that she’d been gifted by one of the humans.
That was it.
There was a spot of blood on her shirt that she frantically tried to scrub out with her hand in a moment of distress. Her face was getting wet - it took her a few seconds to realize why until it finally clicked. She was crying.
And then she was screaming. Voice cracked and horse from pleading with Alessandro, she screamed until her throat ached and all that came out was broken squeaks. When she couldn’t scream anymore she yanked at her hair and silently sobbed. The sky was getting lighter by the minute but Sylvia’s world was getting darker.
“Ma’am, excuse me? Are you alright?”
Sylvia looked up from her place in the alley. A man in a faded black suit approached her slowly, eyes cautious as he scanned the alley.
“Go away,” she choked out. It came out as a whisper and she wished more than anything that she could lash out, pounce, rip this innocent stranger’s throat out. Anything to relieve the tight feeling in her chest.
His speed picked up when he saw the blood on her shirt, the state of her face and hair.
“You’re hurt - let me hel-“
“GO AWAY!”
To Sylvia’s satisfaction her sudden roar, bruised as it was, shocked the man. He jumped back, eyes wide, and made a quick escape. She smiled before it quickly turned into a scowl. Having scared off the one person willing to help her, she was once more alone.
