Back to the whiskey cabinet project I taught last week @lostartpress, here is what I want when cutting dovetails by hand: the tails fit snugly over the pins with hand pressure right off the saw. You can see there is still some waste at the baseline of the pin boards, and that will be chopped out with a chisel and mallet. If you can get to where your workpieces mate right off the saw, dovetails become a very time-efficient joint to cut by hand. This is why it’s important to become confident and proficient using a handsaw (something way easier than most seem to think). It allows you to cut straight to your line and leave no extra material that has to be painstakingly pared down in a fitting and fettling process with a chisel, constantly checking and rechecking for square and tight fitting joints.
