Wine Words: Brix
Winemaking is quite a scientific art form, and the term Brix is a key component. To put it simply, Brix is a unit of measurement used to indicate the sugar content in unharvested grapes. The unit that is used is degrees Brix (°Bx). This measurement is of the density of the sugars in the grape itself. One degree Brix is equal to one percent sugar.
This number is invaluable to a winemaker because it indicates the potential alcohol content of the finished wine. After fermentation, the finished wine is roughly .55 times the degree Brix. For example, a wine that is 25°Bx can potentially yield a wine that is 13.75% alcohol.
