Rose sank to the floor of her bedroom, curling her arms around her knees and rocking back against the door. Head resting there, she listened to her mum and Mickey arguing good naturedly, squabbling over what was going in the hastily prepared gift box for the… for the man who had saved them. Her mum had decided, annoying daughter stealing alien or not, anyone who saved Christmas deserved a gift and she’d emptied out an old shoe box and was packing it with things he’d like from her kitchen cupboards. Tea, bananas and marmalade so far and, unless Mickey could stop her, two jars of jam. It was sweet, and more than she had ever thought her mum capable of, which just seemed to cement even more firmly how much this man was not the Doctor. Because her mum didn’t like the Doctor, and yet here she was, making him a Christmas gift, laying a place for him at the table, making a special effort for him.
It wasn’t him, it wasn’t, and yet she knew it was.
