To Choose Kings (New ways)
So, this is NOT mine - I copied it sometime in the 90′s off the ‘net or an e-mail discussion list. I have no idea who (or who-all) wrote it - I don’t mean to claim anything except it’s funny and/or food for thought. SCA reference.
HOW TO CHOOSE A KING
A new method of selecting kings involved a lottery drawing to determine HOW the next king was chosen. As each reign neared the end, the Throne would draw from a large bag of tiles and the selected tile would describe how the next Crowns would be chosen.
TRADITION!: Crown by right of arms. (The way we do it now.)
"Choosing our kings by combat is the worst method there is....
....except for all of the others."
THE LEAST SHALL BE FIRST: The last person to receive their Award of Arms shall be Crowned.
RUNNYMEDE: The landed barons and baronesses of the kingdom shall select the Crown by consensus.
MIGHT IS RIGHT: Champions shall compete for the honour of placing their candidates on the throne.
TURN AND TURN ABOUT: The predecessor shall be the heir. (The king before the current king shall be king again.)
MORE OF THE SAME: The current reign shall be extended for another period.
KNIGHT AND PAWN: The winner of a chess tournament shall be Crowned.
HOUSE OF LORDS: The next Crown shall be chosen by consensus among the peers.
PARLIAMENT: The next Crown shall be chosen by a ballot held among those holding Awards of Arms.
DEMOCRACY: The next Crown shall be chosen by a ballot held among all the people of the land.
THE DIE IS CAST: Roll the dice and whosoever's membership number is closest shall be Crowned. (One heck big die would be needed...)
AWARD OF THE THRONE: The current Throne will choose the next Crown.
BY FULL COFFERS: The throne may be "purchased" by the person who gives the largest amount of money to the kingdom.
CONSORTS CHOICE - Draw again and use that tile to pick the consort who then picks the King of their choice.
SHORT KING - Shortest adult on site.
LONG KING - Tallest adult on site.
KING OF TAPE - Person with most unused duct tape.
TAPE KING - Person with most duct tape in use.
SPARKLE KING - Person with greatest weight of jewellery round neck.
GET THE POINT? - Whoever shoots the best Royal Round that day becomes King.
IF THE SHOE FITS - All size adjustments are removed from the Crown of An Tir. Whomever the Crown fits best becomes King.
VOICE OF THE CROWN - Whatever Herald's voice can be heard and understood at the greatest distance becomes King.
FRATERNITY INITIATION - Whoever can swallow the most live goldfish without getting sick becomes King.
FATHER OF THE LAND -- Whoever has the most children on site becomes King.
ROYAL FLUSH -- Whoever gets the highest draw poker hand becomes King.
SPELL-DOWN -- Whoever wins an on-site spelling bee becomes King.
DUCK, YOU SUCKER! -- The Queen throws a rose backward over Her shoulder. Whoever catches it becomes King.
WALK THE DOG - the person who has a pet on a leash is made king.
SILVER KING - any couple celebrating their silver anniversary gets to be king and queen.
SKY KING - the person who flew the farthest to get to the event gets to be king.
ROAD KING - The driver of the car travelling the farthest to get the event is made king. "You missed the obvious with that last one. It should be KING OF THE ROAD...." (ducking)
MY BACKYARD - The person who lives closest to the site is made King.
MY GAME - The event autocrat is made King.
OUR GAME - The seneschal of the group hosting the event is made King.
COME IN - The next person entering the site is made King.
BLIND CHOICE - The Queen (why not?), blindfolded, pages through
the sign-in sheets and points. The person who's name is under her finger is made King.
DRAWING YOUR DEVICE - A drawing is made from a bag of shields (exactly like the ones used for the lists board) and the person who's device is drawn is made King.
LONG HOURS - The person with the most hours at the gate at this event is made king.
GROWN UP NOW - (What's the minimum age limit to qualify in heavy, rapier and/or archery?) The youngest person to qualify today is made king.
MADGE'S GAME - Whoever is the most wrinkled from washing feast gear is made King.
LET'S MAKE A LAND DEAL - Whoever can afford it can buy the King.
PIN THE TAIL ON THE PRINCE/SS - The candidates stand around in two circles, one for King and one for Queen. The reigning royalty has the option of being spun about until unable to stand well or playing all comers at Tablero de Gucci. They are blindfolded then led to the circle of candidates and whoever the stick with a pin first is the Prince/ss. Oh, and the candidates are not allowed to move. The nice thing is the currently royalty gets to decide on both the method of confusion and the size of the pin. It also allows them to pick who will select the King or Queen.
GLASSY EYE KING: Those who drove furthest in a single stretch to get to an event after working a full day before and staying up the night before that until all hours of the morning packing the car for the event:-)
CHIVALROUS KING - The person showing the most chivalrousness, gallantry, courtliness, etc. gets the crown.
PROCRASTINATION - Last person to the event gets the crown.
SUCCINCT - Most clear, and concise speaker gets the crown.
HOSPITALITY - The person that wines, dines, and entertains the most people gets the crown.
RED BELT - The oldest squire in the Kingdom gets to be King.
THIN RED BELT - The oldest squire -at-this-event- gets to be King.
KING DEATH - The current holders of the Pernicious Lily award select the next king.
THE SINGING SWORD - The Bards of the Kingdom select the next king.
WOAW IS ME - The members of the Order of WOAW get to choose the next king -- members of the order themselves are excluded.
HERALDICALLY CORRECT - The heralds of the kingdom get to choose the next king.
CHOOSING MY MASTER - The seneschals of the kingdom choose the next king.
THE LAST DROP - The last Goutte made is King.
ARMED AND READY - The last Jambe made is King.
SHAFTED AGAIN - The last Grey Goose Shaft made is King.
TOUCHE - The last White Sash made is King.
DOUBLE THE SERVICE - The last Pelican made is King.
ART OF NOBILITY - The last Laurel made is King.
TWICE A NIGHT - The last Chivalry made is King.
BIRTHDAY PRESENT - Person who's birthday is today is made King.

FOX AND HOUNDS: the First Candidate to catch a Fox in a blackberry patch is King. In case of a tie, the Gentle who can best howl at the moon shall be chosen by popular acclaim.
WARLORD: "Warlords" shall raise armies and compete at a "war". Alliances, generals other than the warlord, and both fighting and non-fighting warlords shall be allowed. Fighting shall continue until only one warlord remains in charge. May the best leader win. (Sort of Ducal war on a grand scale...)
SENIOR CITIZEN - The oldest peer at the event is King.
JUNIOR CITIZEN - The youngest peer at the event is King.
WILL OF IRON: Members of Iron Chain select the Rulers.
A FOOL FOR CROWN: A competition among the Fools to be Ruler. (But what? Best juggling? Longest laugh from an audience? Worst "bit"? Best pie-throw?
WOAW IS ME PART II The Grand High Puntiff is made King (or the most senior member of the order is....heh heh heh)
HUMPTY DUMPTY Couples line up on the eric and play egg toss, i.e. throw a raw egg back and forth, gradually increasing the distance between them. A couple is eliminated if the egg breaks or is not caught.
ALL PARENT The couple with the largest number of natural and SCA children on site wins.
HOODMAN'S BLIND The eric is used for a grand game of hoodman's blind. The crown takes the bells. The first person to tag the crown wins. {Hoodman's Blind:- all players but one are blindfolded, traditionally with a detachable hood worn backwards, and set in a circle. The last player is copiously belled and placed in the center. His job is to avoid capture. Once caught he changes roles with his captor.
FIND THE BEAN: There was once a medieval way in England to choose a "christmass" king, lots of loaves of bread or cake were baked, one of which has a bean in it. Each of the candidates gets a loaf, and whomever finds the bean gets to be king (or queen). By her own lips by right of BEAN!
IN A CIRCLE: A medieval game used to choose "the king of fools" was to put all of the contestants into a circle, they would then commence kicking each other on the behind until an individual would withdraw from the game. this would go on until only two were left and they would trade of backsides until one or the other gave up. This way we would get a true BLUE (and black) Bottom on the thrown.
LOTS of FUN - A number, X, is picked randomly. The Xth person to get to the event becomes king. (simulates the choosing a leader by lots, that was done in some places). Or just dump all the site waivers in a barrel, stir well and the one that gets picked out is king/ruling queen.
LOTS WIFE - Do as above, only the person picked is Consort and gets to pick the Sovereign.
GET THE POINT: The reigning Queen throws a dart at the list board. Whoever's shield the dart lands on becomes the next King or Queen.
KING'S TABLE - Two day Tablero de Gucci tourney. Winner becomes Sovereign.
PORCELAIN CORONATION - Two day Tablero de Gucci tourney. First person to contract alcohol poisoning becomes Sovereign.
PEPE LE PEAU - Stinkiest person at the end of the event becomes Sovereign. Anyone wearing white stripes becomes Consort.
ACTUALLY, it is a SECRET DAGUCCI PLOT! You see, only the DaGuccis have the practice to win this one!
CHICKEN CROSSING WOAW'ED - The Puntiff is blindfolded, placed in a circle of WOAWs, spun, and flings his rubber chicken out of the circle. Whoever is hit by it becomes Sovereign.
CHEQUERED PAST: The person showing up at the Crown Tournament wearing the most plaid gets to be chosen Sovereign.
OF CABBAGES AND KINGS: He/she who could cook the most scrumptious meal, or he/she who could eat the most at a feast... a la South Pacific tradition.
