At just 18 years old, Lottie Tomlinson has already achieved a lot. She’s already released a makeup range with Nails Inc, and has a book coming out later this year.
She spoke to Grazia about how she prefers to be comfy and feel completely herself at all times. Lottie is one for always choosing trainers over heels, owns more tracksuits than she cares to admit, and likes to mix-and-match the tops to the bottoms. She says that the tracksuit is definitely her go to item because its comfort and simplicity allows her to express herself in other ways, with exciting hair and, of course, makeup.
@thedebriefuk: “I cannot live without a tracksuit.” For the latest video in the @adidasuk ‘Walking In Her Shoes’ series, @lottietomlinson talks to @thedebriefuk about why she’d choose comfort and simplicity any day when it comes to her style… #ad
make-up artist, beauty influencer and 1d sibling lottie tomlinson chats the beauty in being true to yourself
About to launch her very own book, the bleach-haired beauty shares her tips to making it in the industry.

Yes, Lottie Tomlinson is Louis from 1D's little sister, but she's also a shining star in her own right. Lottie was 12 years old when she discovered her mum's make-up bag, and from that day on becoming a make-up artist was all she could dream about. Growing up in Doncaster, the Tomlinsons were a big family, which was ideal for Lottie as it meant she had more models to practise her make-up skills on.
Despite being told by teachers that it wasn't a proper job, Lottie persevered. In the end, it was her mum who suggested Lottie go and work with 1D's much loved make-up artist Lou Teasdale. Since then, Lottie's been carving out a career for herself as one-to-watch in the beauty industry. About to launch her very own book, dedicated to beauty on the inside and out, we spoke to Lottie about the importance of creativity and always staying true to yourself.

How has your background shaped who you are as a person?
Growing up in Doncaster and not having much in my younger years has definitely made me more humble, and it makes me appreciate what I have now so much more. Having a large family and lots of younger sisters also sparked my love for make-up and beauty -- I always had someone to practice on when I was at home.
What's your earliest make-up related memory?
Finding a Benefit highlighter in my mum's make-up bag. I asked her what it was for and she explained that it was used to accentuate your cheekbones. I just found this fascinating and started looking up make-up and what each product does on the computer; I was 12 years old.
So you've pretty much always wanted to be a make-up artist?
Yeah, even though teachers at school told me that it wasn't a proper job and I should think of something else. I was adamant that I was going to get there.
So how did you start to make it in a 'proper job'?
When I was 15 I finished my GCSEs and didn't get the grades to study make-up at sixth form. My mum said, "Why don't you go and work with Lou Teasdale for a week and get some experience, then find a make-up college?" I was convinced that she wouldn't want little old me there getting in the way, but she did and it went from there.
What is it about make-up that appeals to you?
I love the way that it can give people so much confidence; you can transform yourself and become a different person. There are also so many different things you can do with make-up; you can express yourself and be so creative. It's kind of all I've known and it has got me where I am today. I've never lost my passion for it and I think that's the main thing.

Who or what inspires you?
I get a lot of inspiration from Instagram; it's amazing to see everyone's work in one place. It's so cool to see all the trends that go round. Huda's beauty page is amazing for keeping up-to-date with all the trends.
What's your career highlight so far?
I think collaborating with Nails Inc. It was my first major project and I had so much fun with it.
What advice would you give to anyone hoping to follow in your footsteps?
I would tell them to work hard and don't give up, because it's not always easy to get there, but if you try hard enough, you can do it.
Whose make-up do you wish you could do and what would it look like?
It would obviously be a Kardashian! Who wouldn't want to do their make-up? I'd probably try using some colour.
What does beauty mean to you?
I think it means being confident and being you. It's easy to try so hard to follow trends and be like people on Instagram and online, but you should always stay true to yourself.
What are you working on next?
My book, I'm so excited! It's dedicated to all things beauty and I think it reflects me so well -- I can't wait to people to see it.
What excites you most about your creative future?
Just being able to share my love of make-up and beauty with everyone online, showing them my favourite looks and seeing them recreate them.
Lottie Tomlinson Shares Her Beauty Industry Secrets
This year has seen some great beauty crossovers – from VB’s fabulously chic range with Estée Lauder, to the late (and great) Sonia Rykiel’s collaboration with Lancôme. The latest beauty collab comes from cult nail polish brand, Nails inc, who joined forces with beauty expert (and One Direction’s groomer Lou Teasdale’s protegée), Lottie Tomlinson. With the success of the 18-year-old’s first collaboration with the brand for their Paint Cans (remember when the world went mad for spray on nail polish?), we’re pretty sure that her Matchbox collection will be a sell-out too.
The four Matchbox sets come with a liquid matte lipstick – watch out, Kylie – and a gel effect nail varnish, all with cute shade names of Lottie’s favourite buzzwords, from ‘Salt’ and ‘Buzzin’ to ‘Out Out’ and ‘Babes.’ To celebrate the launch of this range, Beauty Assistant Chanelle Ho met with the Insta-famous beauty (we’re talking almost 3 million followers…) to catch up on all things lips and tips.
The Matchbox Collection is available now for £15 each at Nailsinc.com

Lottie Tomlinson
You guys likely know Lottie as Louis Tomlinson’s little sis, but over the last year or so, she’s certainly made a name for herself in the makeup industry. From assisting Lou Teasdale on tour with 1D and having her own YouTube channel, to working backstage at London Fashion Week, it’s safe to say that this 18-year-old’s career is off to an amazing start.
Teen Vogue: When do you first start getting really into makeup?
Lottie Tomlinson: When I was about 12/13 I started asking my mum about makeup, what it was and what each thing does. I started browsing makeup sites every day on the computer and I got to know the products quite well. After months of browsing my mum said to me, “you can order one thing.” I was so excited! I ordered the Benefit Erase Paste concealer!
TV: When did you realize that you wanted to be a makeup artist?
LT: At around 13, I knew I wanted to do something in makeup. I'm self-taught — I used to watch makeup tutorials over and over every night and I've grown up around a lot of sisters, so they were always my canvas for practicing! I used to beg them, “Let me do your makeup tonight!” I think I really started to realize I wanted to do this for good when we were on the second tour with 1D assisting Lou, I felt like I was really getting used to the industry and learning so much.”
TV: Who or what inspires you in the industry?
LT: I'd have to say Lou Teasdale because she obviously taught me a lot of what I know and I definitely look up to her. I also love [makeup artist] Lucy Bridge, I've assisted her in the past and I adore her work and think she's amazing!
TV: What’s your advice for other teen artists out there trying to make it big?
LT: I'd say to not give up, as it definitely takes time. Also don't be afraid of being knocked back because it will happen a lot, but you just need to be confident and keep practicing if you are really passionate.
TV: What are your favorite makeup products right now?
LT: I'm loving my Nails Inc 'Good as Gold' paint can, of course! I'm also loving my pore vanishing stick from The Estee Editand my Glossier highlighting stick, they're my essentials.
TV: Do you ever feel like people judge you for being a younger artist? If so, how do you handle that?
LT: One hundred percent. I find it a lot. People are confused when I tell them my age because they may still have been training or in school, etc., at my age. I just always try and be nice even if people aren't the nicest to me, be confident and know that you deserve to be there just as much as them.
