“Just Like Fire” a quick and dirty JT Compher/Tyson Jost primer
Two college boys striking it out in the mountains, a guide to the co-dependent rookie roomies that are JT Compher and Tyson Jost.
First off, these two started out as not-quite rookies together to finish out the 2016-2017 season. JT got his NHL debut March 1, 2017 against the Sens, and Josty came in after finishing his first year at UND--and getting a lot of encouraging texts from Nate, who loves texting boys that he needs them--on March 31, 2017 against the Blues. (His grandpa cried, we all cried, we all know this.)
The Avs threw them together in the summer of 2017 for some golfing (Josty + JT Snapchat Spectacles, they called them 1/2) and from there they’re all over each others instas.
Here’s JT’s post about the golfing feat. this very eyes emoji exchange between Josty and one of JT’s UMich friends in the comments.
After the 2017 Rookie Showcase, JT, Josty, Alexander Kerfoot, and Chris Bigras (rip biggy he’s not dead he just got sent down after Sweden and never came back and eventually got traded) all got their housing letters at the same time and decided to go in on a house together which has collectively been dubbed Rookie House. They also set up a ping-pong system of doing chores that doesn’t work and they promptly seem to forget about. Here’s Kerf calling out Josty for never washing a dish or taking out the trash and here’s JT defending him by calling him the best cook.
They start out the season with Josty rolling out all his favorite nicknames for JT, some of which he can’t say on camera.
After this, they’re pretty much inseparable--alternatively chirping each other on Instagram, driving each other to the rink, or messing around with each other at practice (x / x / x / x).
From October 20th - November 10th, 2017, they’re actually both on IR at the same time (JT for a broken thumb, Josty for a lower body injury,) but they still go to things like the Meet the Team Party at Top Golf together and find time to feed each other at the Mile High Dreams Gala.
The rookies go to Tyson Barrie’s Christmas Party together and wear vaguely matching sweaters and Josty ends up wasted and in JT’s lap by the end of the night, which becomes a theme. Also around Christmas, this happened.
JT gets mad about the Avs Insta posting cute pictures of Josty and demands they take it down, but he still spends bye week introducing Josty to his Michigan friends (once again, comments are king.)
They do a Break the Ice clinic together for some locals and kids and JT refuses to admit they’re even friends, and no one believes him.
They’re always walking into the rink, to the plane, or meeting kids together.
Someone decides to give the Tysons lacrosse sticks, which JT and Josty seem to enjoy.
And then, March 5, 2017, in a hotel lobby in JT’s hometown of Chicago, Altitude decides to give Josty a pair of Enchroma color correction glasses, and JT insists on hosting it himself.
Here’s links to all my gifsets for those: x / x / x / x
From then on, it became a lot more noticeable when JT would get a little rough for Josty, even with Landy.
Josty has a radio interview with Julie Browman and Lauren in which around 12:37:
[talking about girls spending extra time getting ready together in the bathroom]
Josty: Maybe I should try that out a little bit, eh?
LG: Yeah! That’s what you and Compher need to do!
Julie promptly has to pivot it into an Altitude segment idea, in the name of professionalism.
After the season ends, they still end up spending half of it together, starting with longingly staring at each other wakeboarding under the watchful supervision of Nathan MacKinnon before the Gorges-Comeau Charity Homebase Slo-Pitch Tournament in Kelowna where they’re baseball boys together. (x / x)
Then, they head to Malibu for Landy and Mel’s wedding, where they proceed to post stories of them in the exact same location without actually showing them together, and Josty has to once again take care of a presumably very drunk Josty (x - sound on / x / x). This does include cuddling. The next day, they go to the beach together. JT posts this picture of the rookies at the wedding, revealing that not only are they wearing matching outfits, but Josty is wearing a copy of JT’s favorite one (1) nice shirt. Jesse, JT’s sister, posts this comment and the Compher siblings spend the next week in Kelowna with Josty for Jesse’s 19th birthday.
Josty and JT started off the new season pretty hot and scoring goals together.
And then, unfortunately getting injured together in early October, but they helped each other recover (per the Athletic, behind a paywall) and adopted Conor Timmins and did an escape room with Timmins and Sven Andrighetto (Athletic, paywall).
For this year’s Mile High Dreams Gala, Josty got the hosting nod and used the opportunity to flirt with everyone but he and JT decided to air out their domestic squabbles instead.
JT gets some time behind the camera, harassing Josty to sing Christmas carols in his underwear.
Right before Christmas, the two of them seem to get their California sleigh date interrupted by the rest of the team and they go home to their families for Christmas where Josty gets his hair braided by his sister Kaycee and JT gets forced into a sexy Santa onesie.
In January, Josty gets sent to Loveland for a while after long, frustrating stretches of play but JT and Kerf do their best to keep him included (Athletic). They’re very happy when he’s called back up, though.
Josty gets back and they start heating up again and supporting each other and wearing matching suits again. In-between, we learn how much Josty hates Fortnite because JT’s always playing it instead of paying attention to him, they have the same taste in wedding songs, and how Josty’s favorite fan sign is one that roasts JT.
Finally, Josty’s 21st birthday rolls around, and JT helps plan a super soft birthday party.
Anyway, they’re very soft and domestic and in love and let’s end this with them scooting off into the sunset together like they deserve.
