Boulder CO to White Sulphur Springs MT: Coffee, Cowboy Hats, & Little Bighorn

Just a quick update on our weekend time:

Out with a Jam:

We finished up our work with the inspiring folks at Made Collection in  Boulder on Friday and ended our time with them with a great jam session - two guitars, a banjo, and Hicham on his Cajon (A Spanish drum) Friday afternoon. Really fun. Just like with Detroit it was a little sad saying goodbye to Jolene, Scott, Maggie, Carlie, Amy, Isabelle, and the other incredible folks we've made friends with. We will get some audio up of the jam as soon as we can - Maggie can really shred on the banjo. Saturday morning our amazing Air BnB host and new friend Andrew Hyde (Look him up if you ever need a place in Boulder - he set a new standard for hospitality) took us to a local breakfast spot with a lot of character, The Village Coffee House, and then set us off on our way north through Northern Colorado and into Wyoming.

Louis Taubert in Casper WY will sell you a Cowboy Hat:

One of the highlights of the drive and really of our trip thus far was stopping in Casper, WY at Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters, an incredible multi-level store that has been open and family-owned and operated by the Taubert family since 1919. The best part of the store was Louis, whose grandfather opened the store all those years ago. Aside from telling some great stories, showing us family photos around the store, and being an all-around nice guy, he helped Casey, Hicham, and Amaris all pick out Stetson Cowboy hats. After working with Made last week and thinking and talking so much about how to make "Made in America" more relevant to shoppers, it was fun and gratifying to buy something made in America ourselves, especially from a store where the owners are so obviously passionate about their work. Louis' mother is 90 years old and still works in the store! In many ways the store operates as it did back when it stated, with Louis doing everything from helping you pick your hat, to shaping it to your head, to calculating the sales tax in his own head and writing each customer a manual receipt.

Little Big Horn:

On the way to Billings from Casper we stopped by Little Bighorn, a national monument that commemorates a famous battle between the US military and a group of Native American tribes banded together to resist the westward expansion and encroachment on their land and way of life.

We walked around the visitors center and looked at artifacts from the battles and then drove the ring road that takes you through the battlefields where Custer and his men were overrun and more or less wiped out. Casey walks the Battlefield:

We read some of the stories of folks our age and younger on both sides losing their lives - very solemn but beautiful vibe to the place.  

On to White Sulphur:

We pushed on to Billings, grabbed a quick movie and spent the night there. Woke up this morning and drove to Bozeman to REI to pick up some of our camping gear for the Red Ants Pants Music Festival here in Montana. The drive from Bozeman to White Sulphur Springs was one of the most beautiful of the trip. You climb up into higher elevation pine forests on roads that wind up and around, and then get dumped down out of the hills into beautiful grasslands with mountains on both sides. "Big Sky" makes sense for Montana once you experience it - it almost feels like the breeze blows from further away. While Amaris checked out the pool and Hicham went for a long run, Casey and I walked the quarter mile stretch from our motel to the end of the downtown area of main street. White Sulphur is a town of 900 people, but main street has a ton of character in the form of murals, bars with beautiful old signs, a retro filling station, a theater, restaurants, and of course, the Red Ants Pants store, where we will be meeting with Sarah Calhoun and her team tomorrow morning at 10am.
