Ages ago I made Elphie and Glinda dragons for #louisedearman and #ginabeck (nevermind that it took two years for Gina to finally get hers. I couldn't go to America just to see her!) It sort of started a tradition and now Louise has one of each and Nikki Davis-Jones has an Elphie. No doubt there'll be more of them in the future too. #wickedukfanart #dragons #art #sculpture

Review of Water Babies, A Musical Adventure at Curve in Leicester by Helen Knott
If the Wizard of Oz met the Little Mermaid and they had a lovechild it would be Water Babies at Curve in Leicester.
The team of Ed Curtis, Guy Jones, and Chris Egan have, through their direction, words and songs, managed to capture an essence of teenage angst and apply it like eyeliner to the face of a fairy tale. The story is dark and angry one moment, then changes in an instant to funny and bright, perfectly mimicking the emotional rollercoaster of young lives.
The show is still developing but it’s got great bone structure so it’s sure to end up a beauty. Last night there were teething problems. The sound isn’t right yet, work needs to happen to make the chorus audible, the first half has more pace and the much hyped hologram of Richard E Grant didn’t work which was a shame but these things happen. The show works really well for kids of around 8 upwards and it has some belting tunes that give Disney a run for their money and lift it out of the ordinary.
The cast are a solid musical theatre team. Lauren Samuels does great work as Ellie, I felt she was maybe a tad underwritten in this, and Louise Dearman as the fairy Mrs D controlled proceedings with ethereal aplomb and a voice other actresses would happily commit murder for. Thomas Milner brought angry, almost vampiric, teen to Tom. Tom Lister revelled in his role as the Eel with a sensual slipperiness Tim Curry would have been proud of, more so because of the sly nod to Rocky Horror. Tom’s three sea friends, Jock the Lobster, Terrence the seahorse and Claude the swordfish were a joy. The Wizard of Oz style trio capered and cavorted making us laugh and look forward to their every appearance. The steam punk aesthetic was perfect for the Water Babies themselves, although they are not so much babies but teenagers trapped in the most impressive youth club ever!
Amy Jackson and Morgan Large’s designs for costume and set draw the production together with water on land and land under water, giving it a cohesiveness and feeding the gothic spirit of the show. Morgan gives the cast a believable, beautiful world to play in and Amy’s costumes take you on a ride from Dandyism through Dickens and into Helena Bonham Carter’s wardrobe. I really liked Nick Winston’s choreography which had a fresh, street edge and used the much underrated scooter as a mainstay of the Water Babies routines while still holding at the show’s heart big numbers with chimney sweeps, orphans and sealife.
I enjoyed myself, I laughed and afterwards I found myself humming the songs and for me, these are all signs of a hit. Water Babies is a great show and I think you should go and see it now so in future years, when this is a West End hit you can say you saw it here first!
