Dança-ritual de Lousa | Traditional dance & costumes from Portugal (Lousa, Castelo Branco)

The Portuguese city of Castelo Branco is full of very peculiar traditions, especially when it comes to ancient dances with a rutualistic nature. These are the Danças das Virgens (“The virgins' dance”), Danças dos Homens (“The men's dance”) e Danças das Tesouras (“The scissors' dance”), which take place as part of the Festivals in Honor of Nossa Senhora dos Altos Céus ("Our Lady of High Heaven"), which takes place in Lousa, on the 3rd Sunday of May.

The dances date back to 1640 when the people went to thank Our Lady of the High Heaven for responding to the pleas of farmers and shepherds to ward off a locust plague. It begins in the churchyard, after the image of the saint has been collected. The maidens then participate in the procession, as do the men who also dance in the churchyard, accompanied by the sound of the Portuguese guitar.

Initially they were carried out by eight maidens dressed in white with a blue ribbon around their waist, and also, a crown on their heads and a handkerchief to accompany the movements they make when performing the dances. Thus, naming it the virgins' dance. Before the ritual, they declare verses dedicated to the Our Lady and also mentioned the party organizers, the judge, the treasurer and the clerk.

Still following tradition, the girls carry various gold ornaments, while their guardian of the dances uses a sword and accompanies the maidens in the procession to keep the public away, in order to protect the gold and the physical integrity of the maidens. The six men that make it up also wear a white suit, a red/blue ribbon at the waist and on their heads they wear a sort of helmet with colored ribbons.

The last dance takes place on Monday and is, symbolically, the shearing of sheep, that's why the scissors reference. All elements have a white shirt and black pants and there is a foreman who holds a stick, while the shearers have pincers and pretend to sharpen the stick. Then some children appear with fur coats, but turned inside out, with their “sheep” showing, while passing by the shearers who pretend to shear them.
