PawPaw
Last night, I saw you
in a place I couldn’t name,
a funeral filled with family,
old faces, familiar names.
The Randolphs stood together,
the Davenports were there too,
and my little sister was crying
like she had nothing left to lose.
But I was sitting way in the back,
away from everybody,
watching life happen from a distance,
quiet, alone,
like maybe that’s where I belonged.
Then somebody saw me.
“Come up here.
Come be with your family.”
And somehow, through all those people,
through all that sorrow,
I saw you.
PawPaw.
I froze.
Because how could you be standing there
when I know you’re gone?
It felt so real,
like I wasn’t dreaming at all.
Like I could reach out
and you would actually be there
if I just took one more step.
Then I broke.
I cried the biggest cry
my heart had been holding for years…
but somehow there were no tears.
Just pain.
Just love.
Just everything I never got to say.
And I hugged you.
Once.
Then I hugged you again,
even tighter,
like I was trying to hold onto heaven
before it disappeared.
I looked at you
with that look that said,
“How is this possible?”
And you didn’t say a word.
You just lifted your hands
in that PawPaw kind of way…
that familiar gesture
that somehow said everything.
God can do anything.
No speech.
No explanation.
Just you.
Just that look.
Just that reminder.
Then I woke up.
And for a moment,
I didn’t know where I was.
Because my heart was still
standing beside you.
And that’s when the tears came.
Real tears.
The kind that fall
when your soul finally gets permission
to miss somebody.
Maybe you were only a dream.
Maybe you were a memory
wearing the face of heaven.
Maybe God knew
I needed one more hug.
I don’t know.
But I know what I felt.
I felt loved.
I felt remembered.
I felt like, for one beautiful moment,
the distance between heaven and earth
wasn’t so far.
So if that was goodbye,
thank you for the hugs.
If it was a reminder,
I’ll remember your hands.
And if it was God speaking
through the man I called PawPaw,
then I’ll carry those words
for the rest of my life:
God can do anything.
And PawPaw…
if I ever see you again,
I’m giving you
three hugs next time.
