SPENDING THE summer away was going to be such a treat for riley. she had landed a job as a lifeguard at a beach, and the prospect of the sun, sand, and surf was entirely exciting to her. she would stay with a sister of her mother’s, and spend the days lifeguarding and the nights on the beach below the stars. that was, of course, the prospect; upon her arrival, however, she came to the harsh realization that she didn’t actually know anyone there, being away from home and all. she decided to take the brave approach, and to simply befriend strangers. her first target: the surf shop girl. she saw her every day anyways, so it’d be nice to have a friendly face that she would see occasionally. riley realized, though, that she didn’t really know how to make friends, as she had had the same ones her whole life. she realized that she was lurking outside of the surf shop, though, and decided for whatever reason that now was the right time. she approached her, ❛ hey, ❜ solid, ❛ you come here often ?? ❜ and with that, she entirely lost her footing.
