reading the Silmarillion for the first time pt. 3 (I think)

I fear Fingon going into Thangorodrim to get Maedhros will live rent free in my head forever. BECAUSE FINGON DIDN'T KNOW MAE DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE HIM BEHIND HE DIDN'T KNOW THAT "Maedhros alone stood aside" WHEN THE TELERI SHIPS BURNED. But he went for him anyway! And he was willing to do whatever it took to make sure Maedhros wouldn't be left alone to suffer, including killing him when he asked for it, without regard for the mark that would leave on Fingon's own soul, including cutting Maedhros' hand off to free him even as he continued to beg for death. It's a beautiful example of unconditional love. I forgive you, I remember you, I know you, I will do whatever you need. Fingon walked alone into hell, and they BOTH came out again.

Its a gorgeous example that love matters, sometimes it doesn't change anything, and maybe in the long run it never changes anything, but it always matters, it can't stop fate but it can postpone it.
