How to lay Laminate flooring.
How to lay Laminate flooring.
You will need to do a few checks before you start to lay your laminate flooring.
Do you know the are of flooring you wish to cover (allowing for off cuts and if you damage any).
Ensure you have got all the tools to do the job. Pencil, tape measure, saw etc.
A tip to bare in mind is that is when you are unpacking the flooring check to see if the is any imperfections.
Last but not least check to see if the base floor is level.
If you find that you are happy with the base floor, you will need to lay underlay. Now the underlay for laminate flooring is different to carpets underlay. The differences is that laminate underlay has got a waterproof membrane, this will stop wood from splitting.
When laying the underlay you will get recommendations from the manufacture but if you dobnt get any information you should lay the membrane and tape it together or overlap it.
Once that has been done it is a good idea to get started on the flooring.
The best direction to lay laminate flooring is in the direction of a light source such as a window as the light streaming into the room really picks up the shine and beauty of the floor. It is best to start against a wall and then work your way across the room.
The best way to lay the flooring is to read the instructions that come with the flooring because the different manufactures will have there own techniques.
Now you can put your trims and threshold strips on to finish the flooring off. Skirtings or scotia can be pinned or glued into place. They should be glued to the wall and not the floor. This allows the flooring to expand and contract underneath.
Your thresholds will often have a base plate that is screwed or stuck down. With a strip that presses down into it.

Preparing you floor for a new carpet.
Tools that are required…
Flat pry bar
Hammer
Preparing the floor
Firstly you need to clean the room of the old carpet. So take the furniture out of the room and pick a starting point where you would like to bring the carpet up. We would recommend starting by a door. Because it is easier to get the carpet strip out and you have got easy access to pull the carpet up. This would apply to laminated flooring, carpet tiles and vinyl.
While you are lifting the carpet be mind full of staples, carpet grips/ tacks.
Once the carpet has been lifted you will need to make sure the there is no grips or staples are left. We want you to start with a clean sheet.
Now you need to check the sub flooring. This can be either the wooden flooring already in place or the concrete pad. You need to look out for imperfections like dips in the floor, crack or holes. If there is imperfections you can get floor filler from any good DIY shop. And finally you will need sweep and Hoover the floor.
Installing the Underlay.
Any good carpet retailer will recommend you to have underlay. Underlay will come in a roll like thecarpet. But you will need to lay the underlay into strips. You will need to lay this out to the full length of the room. But you will need to leave half an inch around the edge of the room because you will need to place the carpet strips.
A good tip to bare in mind is to staple the strips of underlay together to prevent movement under thecarpet.
