{RC} A book you can finish in a day: The Magician’s Elephant by Kate DiCamillo- So maybe choosing a children’s book to finish in a day is cheating a bit, but I really wanted to read this one so I found a way of sneaking it onto the list. And why not? I’ve loved all of the works I’ve read so far by Kate DiCamillo. Some people may know her by her other famous stories such as Because of Winn-Dixie and The Tale of Despereaux, but her other books have delighted me just as much as those two even as an adult. In The Magician’s Elephant, a boy named Peter learns that his sister is possibly alive and that he will find her if he finds the magician’s elephant. He’s lost his parents and lives a barren life with his caretaker, a veteran who isn’t in the best of shape and doesn’t know how to love a child. Magically an elephant does appear from absolutely nowhere when a small-time magician pulls his biggest trick out of his hat. And thus begins the fantastical story that also involves a mustached constable, a hunchback, and some nuns. Even in this simple telling, I found myself climbing along with the characters when they begin to hope and look up, and I also felt the impacts of the falls they took. This is one thing I love about this book and DiCamillo’s writing in general; through the fantasy and whimsical moments, there is real and deep human emotion that resonates with the heart in a profound way. That may sound a bit deep for a kid’s book, but her stories have always gotten to me like that, and this book is no exception. As my bookish soul was being delighted by the narration, my taste buds were enjoying a cup of vanilla fig herbal tea which fit with the tones of the book in my opinion. Overall, 9/10. #readingchallenge #themagicianselephant #katedicamillo #books #bookreview #reading #childrensbooks #lovedthisone
