She prepared an elaborately delicious, herb-crusted salmon, sweet potato fries, and a cucumber feta salad with mint. Yummy! For dessert (which I refuse to ever skip), she placed two perfect scoops of vanilla Haagen Dazs into a bowl and covered it delicately with fresh cut strawberries. As we sat down on the couch to eat it and enjoy this perfect evening together, I snidely asked her just after I took my first tasty spoonful, “You know how this could be better?” She responded, after a long and uncomfortable pause, “How, Ryan?” (It’s never good when they use your name in the question.) “Chocolate sauce,” I blurted confidently not realizing how stupid I was. (Oopsie) That’s when the room grew silent. She just sat there, looking at her bowl of ice cream, vacant if any chocolate sauce, eating away, probably wondering how she managed to let me get this far. How and why she ever gave me another chance after that, I’ll never know. PS.
