Opening in 1929, the Buffalo Central Terminal served as the main rail station for the city of Buffalo until 1979. A 17 story Art Deco station, over 200 trains ran daily when it opened, with a capacity for handling over 3200 passengers. After years of abandonment following the decline in rail travel, the complex was taken over by the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation to restore and re-purpose the massive complex. Recently, the Central Terminal has become the center of talks for a new Buffalo train station, the redevelopment of which has been championed by Congressman Brian Higgins. Investing in the Central Terminal, he believes, would be the catalyst for expanding the growth and redevelopment the city has experienced in Canalside into the Broadway-Fillmore district of Buffalo's East Side.
