But I was also super curious about the significance of this ceremony, and this is what I found on the internet: This ceremony bears a deep religious significance in Gujarati weddings because the parents of the couple seek the blessings of Mother Earth and ask permission to commence with the digging of the soil to erect the mandva or mandap - for those who don’t know, this is the structure the couple is married under, which traditionally would have gone into the ground.
