Ugh, do I need to watch this?
YUP. I was actually going to make my case for why you should watch it next time we talked, lol. BUT SINCE YOU’RE HERE:
- More than one female character who is ambitious and/or strategy-minded, while also containing complex moral ambiguity and vulnerabilities that aren’t just about them being bested by men and/or falling prey to hetero ~*~feelings~*~ AND those women are allowed to be lovers and friends and build alliances and sometimes betray one another but not because women are fundamentally bitches but because they’re all complex characters with motivations and goals that shift and conflict (aka Eleanor, ruthless queen of my heart, Max, who is both smarter and softer than nearly anyone else on the show (also the only main character of color which is a drawback of the pretty-white show), and Anne, who has the gayest hat, strut, and glare I’ve ever seen anyone have; frankly the fact that she didn’t know she was queer is the most unbelievable thing on the show)
- Lots of talks between men about their feelings, histories, relationships, ambitions, etc. Even though they’re often lying to themselves and/or each other, there are lots and lots of moments of vulnerability and emotional intimacy between men. I die a little every time Flint and Silver have an intense conversation in season three, and it happens like three times an episode, seriously, there’s lots of processing, I love it.
- More than one romantic triad! That aren’t treated as love triangles! More than one queer character! Who are (within the pirate community, at least) not demonized or persecuted for their sexualities!
The first season is slow, but if you stick it out it picks up in season 2. The last season, 4, isn’t up on Hulu yet so I’m not actually totally caught up, but I am hooked (and also reading lots of spoilers).
