A few months back, I was speaking to my mom about the anxiety I was experiencing, my challenges focusing, inability to find a job, and really just doting on myself, at the edge of a mental spiral ready to swan dive up in that thang. She had just attended a mediation training and shared a novel concept with me. She asked me what I had been doing for other people lately? She questioned if I had only been thinking about myself these past few weeks or if my thoughts had ventured outward. Now, at the time, I was pissed. Hey y’all! I’ve missed you all and hope you’re walking in your truth. This is easier said than done, but as someone with anxiety that sometimes cripples me, I know that being my authentic self allows me to feel that much better. It takes time. A daily practice of self love, sitting with your thoughts, processing feelings that seem small or insignificant and not just shrugging them off. We have to come to terms with our pain, trauma, hurt, hate in order to find genuine love, for ourselves and one another. We can do it. We’re even better together! 🌖 In order to access my full self, I have to journey to the dark parts of myself that are not widely on display. I have to sit with this unsettling in my stomach and wander to the outskirts of my soul to figure out what lies there. 🌿 I wrote this in this season’s newsletter and have been doing the uncomfortable work of traveling to my shadow side. What’s down there and how do I get to those feelings? I know many times when uncomfortable feelings come up, I can blink back the tears and easily take my mind somewhere more friendly, more manageable. However, as I sat on the train today and let the tears roll slowly from the corners of my eyes, I began to address the most basic of emotions that I haven’t wanted to deal with, solemnly with my head tilted back. The honesty with myself felt genuine. I don’t ever want to feel like any of my feelings are too heavy a burden for myself, that is a societal trick and if we take a look around, we can see exactly what generations of bottling it up has manifested. And to just honor, accept, validate, and appreciate all the things that come up.” @maryamhasnaa Whoa, these words snatched my wig about 0.3 secs into the tweet. I think they are beyond accurate and resound with the “Choose happiness!” mantra all of us self help folx be about. But seriously, I wonder about the journey on the road to joy as a starting point. It has to require an inward chanting of affirmations, like me this past week at work trying not to pop off! Literally warding off negative self talk and shame! Accepting mistakes, chalking them up to the journey, ✌🏿 and not ruminating over them until you and your gotos are left feeling nauseous. After one too many microaggressions at work this week, I just came home defeated. I scrolled thru twitter and was like yessss, black people! And I was grateful for a place where people I know personally who may not even say their ideas felt free to be themselves. We are so constricted in our workplaces, public space, daily lives, that we really turn to the internet to let loose sometimes and just “kick it” with some folks. Though I think we could do better with engagement versus passive watching, it is still a good refuge sometimes when you’ve felt misunderstood by almost every other human you encountered that day.
