She Was Just Emotional”: The Deadly Stigma Around Women’s Mental Health
“She’s probably on her period.”“Women are too emotional to lead.”“Calm down. You’re overreacting.” How many lives have been dismissed with those words? We live in a world where women’s emotions are a punchline, not a red flag. Where crying at work is seen as weakness. Where expressing frustration labels you as “unstable.” Where the very real, very painful experiences of depression, trauma,…

That kind of love—if you can even call it that—leaves scars that never really fade. I don’t know what’s worse: the fact that he hurt me or the fact that the world still expects me to believe he loved me. Today, my mother told me that my father loved me a lot. But all I remember are the beatings. The yelling. The way he looked at me like I was never enough. I don’t have memories of warmth, of laughter, of a father who wanted to be there for me. Just a man who seemed disappointed that I even existed.
I don’t remember him holding me when I cried. I don’t remember him teaching me anything, guiding me, or simply sitting with me like fathers do with their daughters. What I do remember is the feeling of not being wanted. Of growing up in a house where I knew, even before I fully understood, that I was not the child he had hoped for. He wanted a son. I was not a son. And that simple fact shaped my entire childhood.
People say time heals, but it doesn’t. It just buries things under layers of years, under moments of pretending it doesn’t matter anymore. But then someone says something—like my mother today—and it all comes back. The loneliness. The confusion. The ache of knowing that my father’s love, if it existed at all, never felt like love to me. I wonder if he ever knew how much it hurt to be his child. I wonder if he even cared.
I don’t need people to tell me he loved me. I don’t need them to rewrite my story just because it’s easier to believe in a version where he was a good father. I know my truth. And the truth is, I will never understand how someone can claim to love a child and still make them feel so unwanted.
FINAL POSTERS
I decided to go with line art for my final feedback. For the symbolism behind the posters, with the advice of my lecturer, I decided to put a twist on traditional symbols of womanhood.
POSTER 1: The image is of a woman’s hand giving the middle finger. On the finger, we can see that there’s a ring, which shows that the woman is either engaged or married. But the twist is, instead of a ring, its barbed wire, digging into her finger. This symbolises how women are sometimes trapped in abusive marriages and how much it hurts them, physically and emotionally.
POSTER 2: This poster shows the silhouette of a pregnant woman. The belly is outlined in red, unlike the rest of the body. This symbolises that pregnancies are sometimes literally dangerous for the well-being of a woman in an abusive relationship. The reason is that, sometimes your romantic partner is also your abuser. And children born into these marriages are at increased risk of neglect, abuse, being taken into foster care, etc.
POSTER 3: This poster shows what seems at first to be a loving couple, embracing each other. However, the woman is being threatened, but in secret. This symbolises how abuse is sometimes hidden in plain sight. And how the fear of leaving is sometimes bigger than the fear of staying.

I just wanted to give a word of encouragement to all my domestic violence survivors out there. In the end of 2018 and beginning of 2019 I found myself in a domestic violence relationship for 6 months. I finally took it to the cops but all he was given was probation. I ended up being diagnosed with PTSD. Fast forward two years he’s been in jail at least 7 times that I know and at least 3 charges being felonies...time and time again he kept getting out but FINALLY this last arrest was taken serious. I called the jail and 2 out of his 3 charges has been sentenced (he goes the 3rd for his last charge) and he’s been given FOUR YEARS. I was so in shock I had to call twice just to make sure I heard it right. 😅 Now I have some peace of mind for a good long time that he can’t hurt no one else. I can visit my hometown without anxiety that I might run into him. DON’T GIVE UP SURVIVORS! Karma comes, but most importantly healing comes. ✨💜✨💜✨
