The Girlfriends of BL
I have lots of thoughts on femme fatal representation BL. How “the girlfriend” character is treated and handled by the story as a cookie cutter wedge to separate the protags.
I think one of the best handlings of this was Love Sick with Noh and Yuri. I thought their relationship and breakup was presented really well and was an opportunity for amazing character growth for both of them. Yuri, in particular, changes and learns a lot during the series. She turned into one of my favorite female characters in BL as a result.
I just feel like Love Sick was particularly honest to an actual messy coming to terms with sexuality experience.
Recently, in My Day we got the grown up version of this. Ace talking to his best friend/sort of girlfriend reminded me of the way Noh might have handled things had he been in college instead of high school.
I guess I mostly just really like it when the female girlfriends characters are treated with integrity by the narrative and not just as a tool or wedge for the central gay romance.
