What kind of man accepts a husky as winnings in a bet, then gets the dog a mask to fly him to England? A mad man, that's who.
Like all pilots he has a wild side, but I also HC that he is unbelievably stubborn, and it takes the others completely by surprise because he's so easy going most of the time. No one short of his Colonel can get him to change his mind once he's decided on a course of action. And if people get pushy about it, he pushes back. Harder.
As an Italian American he has a strong sense of family and builds his own in the air force when he can't be with his real family. He's loyal and dedicated and is the one to reach out when someone else pulls away for whatever reason.
The real Benny DeMarco wrote to his parents often, even though he didn't get many letters back likely due to mail delays. But it's clear he missed them a lot, and especially his mother's cooking! So he's a hungry boy and loves food, but I think he sees it as an expression of affection and care. So I see him sharing rations and food with people whether on base or in the Stalag as a means of trying to lift people up and make them feel better.
