In 1995, Karen Zerby launched her “Loving Jesus” doctrine, which involved imagining oneself engaging in sexual acts with Jesus Christ as a form of “worship.” Ironically, Zerby demanded that male members imagine themselves as females when engaging in this practice.
In a policy that some survivors later termed “spiritual transgenderism,” Zerby, who had spent decades spreading homophobic hate, told male cult members that when imagining themselves having sexual relations with Christ, “you are not male, you are a female,” so as to ensure that it would not become a “male/male relationship.”
