Slayyyter - Crank 2025

Catherine Grace Garner, known professionally as Slayyyter, is an American singer-songwriter. Known for her brash and sex-positive lyricism and electropop production, she started her career independently releasing songs through SoundCloud. "Crank" was released on October 24, 2025 as the third single from her third studio album, Worst Girl in America (2026). The song became a sleeper hit and went viral on TikTok in a trend where people mouthed "Crank it!" after receiving their diploma. Slayyyter said in a press release, "In pop and dance music I feel like there is an expectation for songs to have soaring vocal melodies or really pin pointed lyrical concepts. While making this record it felt very freeing to scream about nonsense with distortion on the mic".

Björk - Hunter 1998

"Hunter" is a song recorded by Icelandic singer Björk for her third studio album Homogenic (1997), and was released as the third single from the album. The lyrics explore the pressure Björk felt to write music after realising the workforce that depended on her, following the success she found as a solo artist with her previous studio albums. A collaborative effort between Björk and Mark Bell, "Hunter" features a dark combination of strings and layered synths, a militaristic electronic beat, and enigmatic lyrics about a mission. Most music critics were enticed by "Hunter", which they declared one of the highlights of Homogenic. However, the single charted poorly, peaking at number 44 on the UK singles chart and number 55 in France. "Hunter" was included on Björk's greatest hits album Greatest Hits (2002), whose tracks were selected by fans through an online survey.

The accompanying music video for "Hunter" was directed by longtime collaborator Paul White of Me Company and consists of a close-up of Björk as she transforms into a "techno-bear" while singing. Seeking to convey the music's fusion of organic and technological, the polar bear was animated in a non-naturalistic fashion; the bear also embodies the ferocious hunter the lyrics represent. At the 2000 Fantasporto film festival of Porto, Portugal, Björk received the Audience Choice award for the music video. In 2005, American rockband 30 Seconds to Mars covered "Hunter" for their second studio album (i LOVE that version as much as the original). A version of the song was produced for the 2019 film Terminator: Dark Fate by an artist named Riaya, featuring John Mark McMillan on vocals.

Ini Kamoze - Here Comes the Hotstepper 1994

"Here Comes the Hotstepper" is a song co-written and recorded by Jamaican dancehall artist Ini Kamoze. It was released in 1994 as the lead single from his 1995 album of the same name as well as the soundtrack to the fashion-industry satire film Prêt-à-Porter. It is known for its chorus inspired by the Cannibal and the Headhunters version of "Land of 1000 Dances". It was originally recorded in early 1992 and was passed over by several labels. In 1993, Columbia Records licensed the rights to the song with the intent of including it on their reggae-dancehall compilation album Stir It Up. After the song started climbing on the US Billboard Hot 100 in late 1994, Ini Kamoze was at the center of a bidding war among labels wanting to sign him. The song had not been intended for a single release when Stir It Up was issued, but in the summer of 1994, Columbia decided to remix it and release it as a single. Producer Salaam Remi added a sample from "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner from 1981.

"Here Comes the Hotstepper" remains Kamoze's biggest hit to date. It went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and on the Canadian RPM Dance/Urban chart, while peaking at number two at the US Cash Box Top 100. In Europe, it peaked at number one in Denmark as well as on the Eurochart Hot 100. The single climbed into the top 10 in Austria, Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia), Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Elsewhere, "Here Comes the Hotstepper" topped the charts in New Zealand and Zimbabwe and peaked at number two in Australia. The single was awarded with a gold record in France and Germany and a platinum record in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the US.

The song was included in the 2022 film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and plays during a scene where Sonic is left home alone. It was included in the launch trailer for the video game Yakuza: Like a Dragon. A cover of the song by The Hit Crew was used in the game Just Dance 2.

Poor Man's Poison - Feed The Machine 2020

Poor Man's Poison is an American folk band from Hanford, California. The lineup since its creation consists of guitarists Ryan Hakker and Michael Jacobs, mandolinist Tommy McCarthy and double bassist Dustin Medeiros; all members share vocal duties, although Hakker usually acts as lead vocalist. The band was originally formed in 2009 from the remnants of Done For Good, another band by Hakker, McCarthy and Medeiros; after a hiatus in 2014, they reformed in 2019, this time more focused on releasing studio singles rather than producing albums or performing live. Mostly defined by their acoustic sound, they have been categorized as various genres, including folk, Americana, country, rock, blues, and pop; Medeiros has claimed that the band "cannot be pinned down in one specific category". In September 2012, Poor Man's Poison won the "Best New Act in Country Music" at the Country Showdown in Nashville.

Lubalin - Internet Drama part 2 (She Stole My Broccoli) 2020

Lubalin is a Canadian singer, musician, and video producer from Montreal, Quebec. He was initially a R&B/pop musician before his production of humorous videos attracted wider attention. His 2020 series of internet drama videos attracted over 5 million followers and over 200 million views, and got him invited on to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Kelly Clarkson Show. Lubalin is signed with record label Cult Nation. He also worked as a producer and songwriting collaborator on labelmate Charlotte Cardin's 2023 album 99 Nights, for which he was a dual Juno Award nominee for Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2024.

In the first video in his internet drama series, he took an old screenshot shared to the OldPeopleFacebook subreddit and morphed it into a moody (and suddenly very dramatic) two-person ballad. In the screenshot turned song, an inquiry for a home rental quickly spirals into confusion and threats to contact the attorney general. "That whole week was kind of, can you do it again or was this a fluke?" said Lubalin. "And then I did it again." In his second TikTok in the series, which Lubalin said was inspired by the 1980s sound of the Weeknd, he made an electronica dance track featuring a woman complaining that her broccoli casserole recipe had been stolen by another and passed off as her own. That song has been seen even more times than the first.

As for the woman angry over the broccoli casserole recipe, it doesn't appear she is actually a real person. A 37-year-old elementary school teacher in Texas was role-playing as Helen Hywater in the Facebook group "A group where we all pretend to be boomers" back in March 2020 when she posted the broccoli status and began interacting with Doris, who she said was another role-player. She said that after going viral their accounts were subsequently suspended for pretending to be other people.

Linkin Park - Carousel 1999

"Carousel" originally dates back to 1998 when the band was still called Xero. Following the release of their self-titled demo tape and many showcases, vocalist Mark Wakefield left Xero in 1998. He couldn't perform live because of a really bad stage fright, so they were looking for a new singer. "I wanted somebody in the band who had the same drive and passion for melodic singing vocals as I had towards rapping vocals," said Mike Shinoda. Prior to meeting Chester Bennington, the band had been auditioning for a new singer for 4 to 5 months, meaning they had started while still performing with Wakefield. A new bandname, Hybrid Theory, was suggested by Joe Hahn after the mix of styles they brought to their music.

Hybrid Theory EP is the first EP of theirs released with Bennington. Originally released in 1999, the EP was reissued as Linkin Park in 2001 exclusively to members of the band's official fan club, the LP Underground. "Carousel" was one of three songs co-produced and mixed by Andrew "Mudrock" Murdock and Mike Shinoda. The song was written by Mike Shinoda, Joe Hahn, Brad Delson, Chester Bennington, and Rob Bourdon. Dave Farrell was added to the song's credits on Hybrid Theory (20th Anniversary Edition). The bass on "Carousel" is actually a synth. After the original release of the EP, the band continued working on "Carousel" for inclusion on their debut studio album, Hybrid Theory, but it didn't make it to the final tracklist. "Carousel" has never been performed live by Linkin Park once the band name changed in 2000.

Alphaville - Big in Japan 1984

"Big in Japan" is the debut single of German synth-pop band Alphaville, that led to the production of their 1984 album Forever Young. The single was a success in many countries, including West Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. It reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart and number 1 on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Lead singer Marian Gold developed most of the lyrics while visiting a dentist. The theme was based on two friends who were involved in the sordid drug scene of West Berlin's Zoo station. The refrain "big in Japan" symbolises the idea of being successful in another world, a fantasy about being drug-free. Gold said: "That line has a certain meaning. It means that if you're a complete loser, you're telling other people, 'I'm not a loser because in Japan I'm really big.' It's the lie of the loser and it fitted perfectly into the story of these junkies, which the song is about, in a very tragic way."

The phrase was inspired by the name of the band Big in Japan. Gold said: "As you know, there's a considerable musical market in Japan. If you wanted to become famous, what you should do was to form a hard rock group and then release an album over there; it would definitely sell well… so the story went…" In reaching number 1 on the West German singles chart, the song displaced "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (poll #645), whose lead singer Holly Johnson had been a member of the band Big in Japan. Gold considered this a remarkable coincidence and later said: "we never got to speak with him, but he must have wondered 'who is this German group with a song named after my band?'".

Barnes & Barnes - Fish Heads 1978

Barnes & Barnes were an American musical duo, formed in Los Angeles in 1970. Most commonly associated with novelty music and comedy rock, their music also incorporated elements of new wave, synth-pop, and folk rock. The duo was formed in 1970 by actor Bill Mumy and Robert Haimer who were high school classmates, originally as a private home recording project. When recording or performing as Barnes & Barnes, Mumy and Haimer adopted the personae of Art Barnes and Artie Barnes, respectively: twin brothers from the fictional civilization of Lumania.

"Fish Heads" is a novelty song that was released as a single in 1978 and later featured on Barnes & Barnes' 1980 album Voobaha. It is the most requested song on the Dr. Demento radio show. Actor Bill Paxton, a filmmaker at the time, directed and appeared in the music video for the song in 1980, which got in regular rotation on MTV. The lyrics are an absurdist celebration of fish heads, describing them in the high-pitched chorus as "roly poly" and delicious to eat. The verses describe various things they (mostly) cannot do, such as play baseball, wear sweaters, play the drums, and drink cappuccino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women.

The song is featured in The Simpsons episode "Treehouse of Horror VII". Alan Arkin sings the song in the 1993 movie Indian Summer. In the 2017 television episode "Goodwill" of Halt and Catch Fire, Joe and Haley listen to the song while driving in Joe's car.
